Washington Capitals’ legendary forward Alex Ovechkin has achieved another remarkable milestone in his career. He becomes only the second player to score 1,000 career goals in NHL history. The milestone shows why he remains one of the greatest goal scorers in hockey history.
Ovechkin achieved this feat during the game between the Washington Capitals and the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night.
In the third period, he scored his 1000th career goal (regular season + playoffs), firing a powerful slap shot past goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood.
With this goal, he has joined Wayne Gretzky in the list of players with 1,000+ career goals. Ovechkin’s recent goal against Colorado was his 923rd regular-season one. To date, he has 77 playoff goals in his career.
Earlier, he surpassed Wayne Gretzky to become the highest regular-season goal scorer. He scored his 895th regular-season goal on April 06, 2025.
Gretzky, in his career, scored a total of 1016 goals (regular season + playoffs). He scored 894 regular-season and 122 playoff goals in his career.
Despite Alex Ovechkin's performance on Sunday night, his team lost the game 3-2 in overtime. He scored a goal with five minutes and 43 seconds left in the game.
The scoreboard was 2-2, but Colorado held their game and won the game eventually.
