Alex Ovechkin's Wife Explains Why She's Glad the NHL Legend Chose Hockey Over Football

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final gave fans plenty of exciting moments on the field. It also gave Alex Ovechkin and his wife, Anastasia, a fun moment off the field. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The hot summer weather made it difficult for many fans, including Anastasia.

The extreme heat reminded Anastasia why she is happy Alex Ovechkin chose hockey instead of football. Her funny reaction became one of the most talked-about off-field moments from the World Cup final and showed the big difference between hockey's cold arenas and football's outdoor stadiums.

Speaking about the conditions, Anastasia admitted, "I realized one thing: I'm incredibly lucky that my husband plays hockey, not football. Because this heat is unreal, I can barely sit here. It's impossible, I'm suffocating."

Reported by Pro Football Network's Arjun Bernardshaw, she said it was getting harder and harder to sit through the match because of the extreme heat. She also joked that cold weather is much easier to handle than the hot summer weather.

"I've realized that cold is always better. You can always bundle up. But here? I honestly don't know what to do," Anastasia said. "Sometimes a breeze comes through, and it gets a little easier. But most of the time it's just scorching, and I can barely breathe. So, thank you, Alexander Mikhailovich, for playing hockey."

Ovechkin responded with a simple but affectionate message, saying, "All for you, my love."

The moment gave fans a fun look at the couple's playful bond. It also showed how different life is for hockey players and football players in different weather conditions.

Ovechkin Still Has History Waiting in His 22nd NHL Season

The same Pro Football Network report said Ovechkin's fun moment with his wife came during an important time in his career. After thinking about his health and future, the 40-year-old decided to return for his 22nd NHL season. He signed a one-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals.

The new deal has a $4.25 million salary-cap hit. With bonuses, Ovechkin can earn up to $9 million if he stays healthy all season. He will also join Sidney Crosby as one of only 25 players in NHL history to play at least 22 seasons.

Ovechkin made NHL history in April 2025 when he passed Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 regular-season goals. He now has 929 regular-season goals after scoring 32 last season. Including the playoffs, he has scored 1,006 professional goals and is only 11 away from Gretzky's total of 1,017.

Washington hopes to make another playoff run, and Ovechkin is still chasing more records. He has every chance to add more achievements to his great career.

Anastasia's comments showed she is happy he is chasing those records in NHL arenas instead of playing in the hot summer sun. Can Ovechkin reach another historic milestone before he retires? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
