Alex Tuch opens up about his decision to join the Capitals

The move by Alex Tuch to the Washington Capitals has already become one of the most interesting sign-and-trade stories of the offseason. It comes at a time when the team’s long-term direction and core are still not fully settled.

As reported by NHL Media’s Heather Engel and a 106.7 The Fan clip on X, Washington’s pitch was not only about star players. Tuch said Washington’s mix of experienced players and young talent helped him choose the team. He also said coaching stability, strong management support, and a win-focused roster influenced him.

“Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of things. I still think that, I mean, he adds an element. Obviously a Stanley Cup winner, greatest goal scorer of all time, and a lot of intangibles, leadership in the locker room,” he said.

Tuch credits GM and coach enthusiasm, plus coaching stability, for confirming Capitals as an ideal long-term fit.

“And then talking to the GM and the coach, especially afterwards. They just seemed super excited to have me on the team and it just seems like a really good fit. And I know the coach is young and Jack Adams winner and just signed for another three years. So that stability really helped and just seemed like all the pieces really fit.”

Alex Tuch said the Virginia area made joining Washington feel more natural and more attractive.

“The more we did research into the D.C., Virginia area, the more we kind of started to love the idea of coming and playing for the Capitals.”

In the 106.7 The Fan interview shared on X, Tuch said the Capitals’ message was very strong during discussions.

Even without knowing if Alex Ovechkin would return, Tuch still felt confident in joining the team long-term. Tuch, 30, joins Washington after a strong season with the Buffalo Sabres, where he scored 33 goals and was a steady scoring threat.

A fit built on coaching, trust, and a long-term plan

Alex Tuch said talks with coaches and management made him confident about joining Washington. A young, award-winning coach and a stronger roster also helped his decision.

As reported by Heather Engel on NHL Media, the Capitals got Tuch from the Buffalo Sabres in a sign-and-trade deal. In return, Buffalo received David Kampf and a 2027 third-round draft pick.

“They have a couple really young studs coming up in Leonard and Hudson. But I think it's a really well-rounded team, a couple of good goaltenders. It just made sense,” Tuch said.

Tuch said the Capitals’ quality wasn’t the issue last season. It was availability.

“I think they still have an unbelievable core with or without him. And a couple of really good sentiments. And I thought the team had a lot more promise than maybe they did last season with a couple injuries to Dubois and Wilson that I think really derailed them.”

Tuch felt quickly welcomed by teammates and their families, which made Washington feel like the right fit. The Capitals see him as a top-six forward who can play all roles, as GM Chris Patrick noted. The real test will come in the season.
