Over two decades in the NHL, the Washington Capitals captain, Alexander Ovechkin, became one of the league's most commercially successful players. He holds strong numbers both on and off the ice.

Ovechkin's first contract with the Washington Capitals was a three-year deal that was worth over $11 million. Owing to his performance-based bonuses, the Russian had the opportunity to raise his salary to $3.9 million.
In 2008, the Capitals signed the then 22-year-old star to a 13-year deal, which was worth $124 million via SI, raising his annual salary to $9 million. This was one of the largest contracts at the time in NHL history.

The 2018 Stanley Cup, in particular, made up his entire legacy. Ovechkin led the Washington Capitals to their first NHL championship and was the first Russian player to become a captain of a team to win the Stanley Cup.
In April 2025, Ovechkin scored his 895th regular-season goal and surpassed Wayne Gretzky's record. In March 2026, Ovechkin scored his 1,000th career goal and became the second player, after Gretzky, to accomplish the feat.
Alexander Ovechkin is a consistent player who is still among the league's top scorers even in his late thirties.
