Max Plante just gave Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs fans two reasons to celebrate. Shortly after winning college hockey's prestigious Hobey Baker Award, the Detroit Red Wings prospect announced he will return for another season, delaying his jump to the NHL.
Generally, it is believed that strong performances in college hockey help players progress to the next level, such as the AHL, CHL, or NHL. Returning to college after winning the Hobey Baker has become less frequent in the modern era, with most winners turning pro immediately.
It does happen, often with the motivation of completing a degree or chasing a national title. Isaac Howard (2025 winner) confirmed his return to Michigan State shortly after winning the award in April 2025.
However, Max Plante has made it clear that he will return next season to play once again for the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at the University of Minnesota Duluth. This means he is not planning to join the NHL just yet.
The Detroit Red Wings selected Plante in the second round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, with the 15th pick of the round (47th overall). However, the franchise will not be able to utilise his services immediately.
For the 20-year-old, returning to the Bulldogs is great news for the team’s fans. An NHL-calibre talent returning strengthens the team's outlook and raises the program's profile.
Moreover, Plante’s decision to keep playing for the Bulldogs also reflects his loyalty to the team. He wants to return to the place where his journey began and where he received the platform to grow as a player.
His presence, leadership, offensive production, and valuable experience are expected to play a major role in the team’s success.
In the 2025-26 season, the 20-year-old forward played 40 games and scored 52 points. That includes 25 goals and 27 assists. The numbers showed his consistency, and he truly deserved the award.
Max Plante After Winning The Hobey Baker Award
After winning the 2026 Hobey Baker Award, Max Plante expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, and coaches. He reflects on the journey that brought him to college hockey’s biggest individual stage.
“First, I'd like to thank my mom, my dad, and my little brother, Victor. You guys have been there every step of the way.”
“Eric, TJ, you guys could be up here just as easily as I. A bunch of other great players out there, too, and it's special.”
Plante continued his speech by thanking his extended family and coaches, acknowledging their guidance and constant support throughout his journey.
“My aunts, uncles, and cousins, I truly have the best family, and I thank you for that. My coaches, Coach Sam and Coach Krause, Brent, Chupper's not here.”
From a broader perspective, Plante staying in college can be a strategic move for prospects. Extra time in the NCAA helps players refine their skills and prepare for the demands of pro hockey.
Let’s see what he will bring to the table next year.
