The Chicago Blackhawks made one of the biggest trades of the offseason by acquiring Bowen Byram from the Buffalo Sabres. NHL.com reported that Chicago received Byram and forward Jordan Greenway. In return, Buffalo got the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, defenseman Louis Crevier, and the No. 45 pick in the second round.

After the trade, Bowen Byram said he was excited to join Chicago.

"I'm just super excited to end up in Chicago. It's been one of my favorite teams growing up. My dad (Shawn) played in the organization, and it's always kind of felt like the place I wanted to end up."

It is learnt from the NHL report that Bowen Byram also explained why he feels Chicago is the right place for him at this stage of his career.

"I feel like I'll get the opportunity to play and do what I can to help the team improve and help the team win."

The trade gives Chicago a proven top-four defenseman instead of waiting for a young draft pick to develop. Byram, 25, had the best season of his NHL career last year.

Byram scored a career-high 42 points (11 goals, 31 assists) in 82 games for Buffalo. The former No. 4 overall pick also recorded seven points in the playoffs and helped the Colorado Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 2022.

He has one year left on his contract with a $6.25 million salary-cap hit. The Blackhawks now add a proven NHL defenseman as they continue building around their young players and try to return to playoff contention.

What Bowen Byram Brings to Chicago's Defense

In the same NHL.com report, Byram also explained why Chicago is the right fit at this stage of his career. Byram outlined his strengths in skating, puck-moving ability, and two-way play.

"I'm a two-way defenseman. I transport the puck. I can move the puck, whether it's passing the puck up the ice or using my feet."

He also said he takes pride in his defensive game and can help on special teams.

"I think I can help the power play, but I also think I'm a good defender."

Chicago traded a top-five pick for a 328-game veteran with playoff experience and added depth via Greenway. The Blackhawks also added veteran forward Jordan Greenway, who brings extra depth and physical play to the lineup.

For Buffalo, the trade adds more draft assets ahead of the first round at KeyBank Center.

Chicago, meanwhile, chose to add a player who can help right away instead of waiting for a prospect to develop. The move shows the Blackhawks want NHL-ready talent as they continue building for the future.

This trade could become one of the biggest moves of the offseason. Its success will depend on how Byram performs in Chicago and how Buffalo uses its new draft picks.
