The Chicago Blackhawks have secured the biggest part of their rebuild by signing Connor Bedard to a new contract. The 21-year-old star signed a five-year extension that keeps him with Chicago during his prime years.

The deal removes uncertainty about Bedard’s future, but it also raises expectations for the Blackhawks. Contract talks included issues like Bedard’s shoulder injury and NHL offer-sheet discussions. Despite his value, Bedard signed for less than Leo Carlsson’s $18 million-per-year offer sheet.

Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson believes Connor Bedard has already shown that he can become the face of the franchise.

“Connor has continuously defied our expectations since being drafted, and has quickly established himself as an elite player in the NHL,” Davidson said.

Noted by Vinnie Parise of The Hockey News, Kyle Davidson praised Bedard’s all-around impact, leadership qualities, and ability to elevate teammates around him.

“He utilizes all aspects of his game to not only be a constant threat, but to make the players around him better every time he steps on the ice. Connor’s strong work ethic and determination to always improve his game has set an extraordinary standard for our young core, and we’re excited for the incredible impact he’ll have in this next chapter of Blackhawks hockey.”

However, the extension also creates pressure for Chicago. When the deal ends, Bedard will be 25 years old and can become an unrestricted free agent. If the Blackhawks are still not competitive, keeping him could become difficult.

The five-year contract gives Chicago time to build a winning team, but the franchise must show progress before Bedard gets more control over his future. A no-move clause starts in the final year of the deal, making the next few seasons even more important.

Blackhawks Must Build the Right Supporting Cast Around Bedard

The same ‘The Hockey News’ report by Vinnie Parise also explained that Chicago’s next focus is building a stronger team around Connor Bedard. The Blackhawks need to find players who can help their young star reach his full potential, especially a talented winger who can become his long-term offensive partner.

With Frank Nazar and Anton Frondell developing as centers, Chicago may need to find a scoring winger from outside the organization to play alongside Bedard. Whether that player comes from the current roster or a future addition remains a key decision for the front office.

Another important choice is making Bedard the team captain. Parise said Bedard has shown interest in taking on that role, and naming him captain could further confirm his place as the face of Chicago’s future.

Bedard taking less money shows his commitment to the Blackhawks, but Chicago must build a winning team around him to keep that trust. The contract is done, but the bigger challenge is just beginning.
