The Buffalo Sabres delivered one of the most memorable moments of the 2026 NHL playoffs by eliminating the Boston Bruins and ending an 18-year playoff series win drought.
On May 01, 2026 (Friday), the Buffalo Sabres won Game 6 by 4-1, securing their place in round two of the NHL playoffs.
It’s the first time since the 2006-07 season that they have won the series.
In fact, they ended their 14-year drought of reaching the playoffs earlier in the season.
It’s a big moment for the franchise because they have been struggling to even reach the playoffs. And now they have won the series as well.
After ending the drought, Alex Tuch stressed the team remains focused on bigger playoff goals ahead.
"It's one step in the right direction. That's it," Tuch said.
The Sabres coach, Lindy Ruff, doubled down, explaining that reaching the playoffs is the first step.
"I think Part A is getting to the playoffs. Part B is trying to have success once you get there," Ruff said.
The coach also praised his team’s effort, saying they accepted the tough challenge and fought hard to beat a strong Boston side.
"We talked about what a challenge it was going to be to try to take out a good team. And Boston's a good team…I thought our guys dug in and gave us a heck of a game tonight," Ruff added.
The Buffalo Sabres won the Atlantic Division title, and it was a full turnaround for them.
Buffalo Sabres To Play the Winner of Canadiens-Lightning
Now that the Sabres reached the 2nd round, they will wait for the result of Game 7 between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Montreal Canadiens.
The two teams are squared at 3-3 after 6 games, and the finale will be played Sunday.
Earlier, in Game 6, Alex Tuch and Mattias Samuelsson scored in the first period for the Sabres against the Bruins.
Zach Benson added another goal early in the third period. Josh Norris scored an empty-net goal. Alex Lyon made 25 saves.
Buffalo Sabres maintained constant pressure, limited space, and forced Boston Bruins into mistakes, disrupting their attacking rhythm and scoring chances.
As they move into the next round, the Sabres carry momentum, belief, and the confidence of a team that has finally rewritten its narrative.
