The Montreal Canadiens just fortified their young core even more by locking in goalie Jakub Dobes, and fans couldn’t be any happier.

“The Canadiens have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension (2027-28 to 2029-30) with goalie Jakub Dobes,” the team’s official X page posted on July 3, 2026.

After locking in Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, Noah Dobson and Lane Hutson all under 10M each for the next 4 years, including the 8-year contract extension to Ivan Demidov, Canadiens’ General Manager Kent Hughes added Dobes to the list with an average annual salary of $5,357,575.

The extension was inevitable given Dobes' numbers. Per ESPN, the rookie netminder played 43 games this season, posting 29-10-4 with a 2.78 GAA and .901 Save Percentage. Dobes led all rookie goaltenders in wins and ranked ninth overall in the category, as noted by NHL.Com’s news release on July 3, 2026.

The Canadiens' front-office decisions merged cap management with team-friendly deals. And the fans on X were having every moment of it.

Fans on Social Media Erupt Over Extension

According to The Athletic’s Journalist Arpon Basu, the team can keep its best players under contract through 2030 for just under $63 million. And fans applauded the GM for maintaining flexibility in future roster upgrades and also keeping the Habs happy by adding another face to the list.

“WE GOT THE DOBERMAN FOR THREE MORE YEARS,” one fan wrote. Another added, “DOOOBYY!!!! Again, Kent Hughes is cooking with this team!!!! Great move!” “Kent Hughes is locking up all of his young talent!” said one.

The preseason was good, but it was the postseason where Dobes hammered every last nail. The goalie played each of the team’s 19 games through the Eastern Conference Final, posting a 2.66 GAA and .908 save percentage. And the fans knew it.

“Love to see it. Not even concerned if he regresses a little, tbh. Dobes proved he has that dog in him. Big game player. Now let's let him prove he can repeat it,” wrote one. Another added, “So well deserved, congrats Doby!!!”

Someone even noted that the goalie deserved to win the Conn Smythe trophy had his team played better in the 2026 Eastern Conference Final against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canadiens only won the opening game 6-2 and lost the rest.

“Congrats, Jakub Dobes. Had your teammates scored some goals vs Canes, you were destined to win the Conn Smythe. Salary well deserved,” they wrote.

Amidst the whirlpool of emotions and comments, the Habs dominantly celebrated Dobes’ contract extension, ready to watch how the Doberman does next season.
