The Vancouver Canucks have officially cleaned house. Head coach Adam Foote and his entire coaching staff were fired on Tuesday.

The decision came just five days after Ryan Johnson took over as the team's new general manager. Assistant coaches Scott Young, Kevin Dean and Brett McLean were also let go.

It was a brutal first season for Foote as an NHL head coach. The Canucks finished with a 25-49-8 record, the worst in the entire league.

"It was a challenging year on several fronts and truthfully, Adam and his staff were dealt a very difficult hand," Johnson said in a statement. But he made it clear that the team needs a fresh start.

"As we head into a rebuild, our group feels new coaching voices are needed to chart the path forward," he added. Johnson believes building the right culture is the first big step.

Foote, 54, was no stranger to the Canucks organization. He spent three seasons as an assistant coach under Rick Tocchet before getting the top job last summer.

When Tocchet left to coach the Philadelphia Flyers, former GM Patrik Allvin handed Foote the reins. There was a lot of talk that the move was made to keep star defenseman Quinn Hughes happy.

Hughes, a 2027 free agent, had an uncertain future in Vancouver. And Foote had worked closely with the blue line as an assistant.

But that plan fell apart. Hughes was traded to the Minnesota Wild in December after it became clear he would not sign an extension.

Foote himself had a strong NHL career as a defenseman. He played 19 seasons in the league and won two Stanley Cups with the Colorado Avalanche.

His firing is part of a much bigger shake-up in Vancouver. Daniel and Henrik Sedin were recently named co-presidents of hockey operations.

Former team president Jim Rutherford has moved into a senior adviser role. Allvin was fired, and Johnson stepped in as the new GM.

"At the start of next season, our coaches will need to do a lot of work with our players," Johnson said. "The process to bring in a new staff begins immediately."

Who Could Replace Adam Foote in Vancouver?

The early buzz suggests the Canucks may not have to look very far. Most signs point to an internal hire for the head coaching job.

Manny Malhotra is the name everyone is talking about. The 46-year-old is currently the head coach of the AHL Abbotsford Canucks, Vancouver's top minor league team.

And his connection to the franchise runs deep. Malhotra played three seasons in Vancouver during his playing days.

He also spent seven seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL with both the Canucks and the Toronto Maple Leafs. So he knows the league and the team inside out.

But what really makes him stand out is what he just did in the AHL. Malhotra led the Abbotsford Canucks to the Calder Cup in his very first season as head coach in 2024.

That kind of success is hard to ignore. He clearly knows how to build a winning culture, which is exactly what Johnson says the Canucks need right now.

There is also a strong personal link between Malhotra and Johnson. Johnson was the general manager of the Abbotsford Canucks before getting the Vancouver job.

The two already know how to work together. That trust could give Malhotra a real edge over outside candidates.

Of course, nothing is official yet. But if the Canucks want a coach who fits their rebuild and understands the organization, Malhotra checks every box.
