Capitals Coach Spencer Carbery Reveals How Washington Became a Top NHL Free-Agent Destination

Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery believes the team’s recent changes have made Washington a top destination for NHL free agents.

This is a big shift from earlier years when the team was not seen in the same way. The Capitals have now moved from missing the playoffs to becoming one of the most active and attractive teams in the 2026 offseason.

Carbery said this new team identity has changed how players around the league view Washington.

“Yeah, it’s exciting,” Spencer Carbery said, as reported by Ian Oland, RussianMachineNeverBreaks. “I can feel the energy around our team… there’s a lot of talk in the hockey world about our group… They’ve done an amazing job of identifying those needs and executing the moves to get it.”

He also stressed that Washington’s growing reputation is now changing how teams recruit players across the NHL.

“There’s multiple moves, signings in there where players want to come play in DC… when you’ve got 31 markets to choose from… and players that are really, really good in the league want to come here… that’s something we all should be real proud of.”

After just missing the playoffs, Washington quickly changed its roster. The team added Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch, Boone Jenner, and Vincent Desharnais. It also signed depth players like Jonny Brodzinski, Justin Holl, and Josh Dunne.

This strong roster change shows that the team wants to compete right away while also building a strong future around captain Alex Ovechkin, who signed a one-year extension.

Spencer Carbery said factors like strong leadership, a good locker room culture, Alex Ovechkin’s presence, and improved team facilities are all reasons why players now prefer joining Washington instead of other teams.

Washington’s rise as a full sports powerhouse

Beyond roster building, Washington’s appeal is also connected to the city’s wider sports growth, as RMNB reported.

The Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup win and Alex Ovechkin’s goal-scoring milestones have helped turn Washington into a strong hockey city. Youth hockey participation has increased, and fan interest has also grown a lot.

The $800 million renovation of Capital One Arena and the nearby MedStar Capitals Iceplex has improved the team’s facilities and made them some of the most modern in the NHL.

Players are choosing Washington DC over other NHL markets because they want to live, play, and succeed there.

“There’s multiple moves, signings in there where players want to come play in DC… when you’ve got 31 markets to choose from… and you have players that are really, really good in the league, that want to come here and want to live in this community, want to play for this organization… ‘There’s the spot I want to be,’ is something that we all should be real proud of.”

Washington’s overall sports scene is also doing well, with the Commanders, Wizards, Mystics, and Spirit all seeing more excitement from fans. This has made the city more attractive for professional athletes.

Carbery’s comments show Washington is no longer just a regular NHL market but a destination team. If this continues, the Capitals may not only attract top free agents but also shape the league’s competitive balance for years.

Washington’s change raises an important question. Can the Capitals turn this strong reputation into long-term championship success? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
