Connor Bedard Weighs Team Canada Decision Amid Contract Talks With Blackhawks

Connor Bedard faces a crossroads between representing Team Canada and securing his future with the Chicago Blackhawks. His entry-level deal expires on July 1. The star must now weigh injury risks against his first major contract extension.

Team Canada is fine-tuning their roaster for the 2026 IIHF World Championship. But, they did not have clarity regarding the joining of a star forward, Connor Bedard.

On July 1, 2026, Connor Bedard’s entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks will expire. After that, he will become a free agent and start thinking about his next contract. He was the first overall pick in the 2023 NHL entry draft.

Connor Bedard is the main star of the Chicago Blackhawks, and the team is rebuilding its future around him. This means Chicago is trying to build a strong new team by keeping Bedard as its central player.

Because of this, his new contract talks are very important for both sides. The team wants to secure him for the long term, and Bedard also needs to make sure his future with the franchise is stable.

That is why contract discussions are the top priority right now before he makes any other decisions. On the other hand, Team Canada is also chasing a gold medal in the 2026 IIHF World Championship.

And they also wanted to assemble the best team with the best players. They are also looking at Connor Bedard to complete the puzzle.

Why Connor Bedard Might Decline a Team Canada Call-Up Amid Contract Talks?

Sometimes, what happens is that if a player plays in an international tournament, there is always a chance of injury or tiredness (fatigue). Because of this, teams often prefer players to stay healthy during important contract years.

So, during contract negotiations with the Chicago Blackhawks, the team may ask or prefer the player to avoid extra tournaments. That is why Connor Bedard might skip international events to reduce risk and focus on their NHL careers.

There is some history associated as well. Last year, Bedard declined the invitation to play the World Championship. The decision did help him as he did well in the NHL 2025-26 season, scoring 75 points.

This offseason is one of the important phases of his career because he has yet to sign an extension or a new contract. That’s why he will carefully decide whether to stay focused on his NHL contract or to serve Team Canada.

Bedard’s decision will depend on how quickly contract negotiations progress and how comfortable he feels with his offseason schedule
