Connor McDavid’s Emotional Reaction Says It All as Family Surprises Him After Matching Wayne Gretzky Milestone

Connor McDavid winning his fifth Ted Lindsay Award was already a special achievement, but the surprise celebration made it even more memorable.

The Edmonton Oilers captain thought he was taking part in a normal golf outing, but his family and close friends had planned a surprise for him.

The surprise came after McDavid won the Ted Lindsay Award for the fifth time. Since NHL players vote for the award, it meant even more to him. When his family and friends appeared, McDavid was clearly surprised.

Later, he admitted that something had felt a little different during the golf round.

“I was texting my buddies mid-round and they weren't texting me back. I thought that was a little bit odd,” McDavid said according to post by @NHL on X. “Such a special way to do it with, as I said, with family here, friends, hometown buddies that I don't get to spend too much time with. Definitely means a lot.”

McDavid expected a regular day. His wife, Lauren McDavid, said he believed they were just playing nine holes of golf before going to dinner, something they often do.

Instead, his parents, Brian and Kelly McDavid, his brother, Cam McDavid, his wife, and four close hometown friends were waiting to celebrate with him.

Lauren McDavid later said that Connor McDavid was truly surprised by the celebration. Before the reveal, his mother, Kelly McDavid, predicted that he would be shocked but would stay calm.

The moment showed a different side of McDavid. Instead of being only about an individual award, the celebration became a special moment shared with family and close friends.

Connor McDavid reflects on player-voted honor after matching Wayne Gretzky milestone

The surprise was special, but the award itself was also a major achievement. By winning the Ted Lindsay Award for the fifth time, Connor McDavid joined a group that includes some of hockey’s biggest legends, including Wayne Gretzky.

For McDavid’s father, Brian McDavid, seeing his son’s name mentioned with Gretzky’s is still hard to believe. He said the journey from a young hockey prospect to an NHL superstar feels unreal, and moments like this make all the hard work and sacrifices worth it.

“Wayne is the iconic player in the game. And to have Connor's name, you know, up there with his name is just surreal”, Brian said.

McDavid, however, focused more on what the award means than on the record itself. Since NHL players vote for the Ted Lindsay Award, the honor comes from the same opponents he competes against throughout the season.

“This award coming from the guys that you play against every single night and battle against every single night and to have them recognize me and an award like this, that means so much,” McDavid said.

That perspective helps explain why the moment meant so much to Connor McDavid. Matching another impressive milestone added to his legacy, but celebrating it with his family, close friends, and the players who voted for him made the achievement even more special.
