Connor McDavid’s Playoff Exit Comments Add Pressure to Oilers’ Roster Moves; Bobby McMann Emerges as Target

The Edmonton Oilers are now facing a lot of scrutiny regarding their early exit from the 2026 NHL playoffs. Their captain, Connor McDavid, commented about it, bringing a lot of attention to the team’s offseason plans.

After this disappointing exit from the Stanley Cup event, McDavid labeled the side "an average team with high expectations." As a result, discussions around the Oilers' offseason plans have arisen. This puts a lot of pressure on their general manager, Stan Bowman.

McDavid's honest remarks led many analysts to believe that the manager could be making aggressive moves in this offseason. Rumours around the possible roster changes also say that the Oilers might target Bobby McMann.

McMann is well-known for his physical style of play. He is also reported to have had his speed and two-way play fit the Oilers well. The Oilers need depth in their middle and bottom six forward lines.

The 29-year-old winger has a strong reputation, building a solid mark. He recorded 19 goals and 32 points in 60 games for Toronto before the trade to Seattle in March 2026.

McMann was linked to Edmonton previously, too, while he was with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He then moved on to the Seattle Kraken ahead of the NHL trade deadline.

There were many teams interested in acquiring the player at the time, due to his versatility and relatively affordable contract situation.

At this stage, there is no official confirmation from the Oilers of pursuing McMann. But there is a lot of speculation that the Oilers might restructure their roster this offseason.

The Oilers’ Disappointing Early Exit

The Oilers were eliminated by the Anaheim Ducks in Game 6 of the first round of the playoffs on May 1.

The team entered the game holding a lot of expectations from their consistent finals appearances in the Stanley Cup in previous years.

After their elimination, their captain, McDavid, openly acknowledged and talked about his team's shortcomings in the series,

“We were an average team all year. An average team with high expectations, you’re going to be disappointed. We just never found it,” he said.

He admits several issues with the team being unable to respond properly, losing out on points during the key moments.

“They played very fast, and we weren’t very fast,” he adds.

The Oilers campaign quickly ended with a 5-2 defeat to the Ducks. The opponents advanced to the second round with 4-2.

McDavid’s post-game comments after a disappointing exit added a lot of attention to how the team would plan to structure their roster ahead of the 2026-2027 NHL season.
