Could Toronto Acquire Patrick Kane? Insider Discusses Preliminary Contact

Patrick Kane is still one of the biggest free agents available, and even a small link to the Toronto Maple Leafs has created a lot of talk. Toronto has spent much of the offseason looking for more scoring help on the wing, while Kane had another strong season with the Detroit Red Wings.

That is why the latest update from NHL insider David Pagnotta has attracted attention. According to Pagnotta’s comments on Toronto Sports Rush, Kane and the Maple Leafs have only had early talks so far, not serious negotiations.

“I think there's been some conversations with Toronto, but I think very loose.”

The NHL Rumour Report shared the insider’s comments on X. It shows that the Maple Leafs have looked into adding Kane, but they are not the top team pursuing him right now.

Toronto has a reason to consider Kane after he scored 16 goals and added 41 assists for 57 points in 67 games during the 2025-26 season. His scoring ability, puck skills, and power-play experience are still valuable at 37 years old.

At the same time, Toronto’s management has spent the offseason making changes and building the roster in a new direction. The team needs to think about salary space, how Patrick Kane would fit into the lineup, and their bigger goal of creating a deeper team that can stay competitive throughout an 82-game season.

For now, Pagnotta’s report only puts Toronto in the discussion. Kane is still an interesting option, but he is not a confirmed target, and there is no sign that a deal is close.

Kane’s market extends beyond Toronto

The same Toronto Sports Rush report also mentioned that Patrick Kane has interest from other teams. Recent rumors have linked the veteran winger to the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Minnesota Wild.

As per the report by Vincent Carbonneau on Markerzone, wider interest could be another reason why Toronto is moving carefully. Kane’s career numbers are impressive, with 508 goals, over 1,400 points, and years of success in big moments.

However, the Maple Leafs are starting a new chapter after changing coaches and making changes in the front office. The team may want to focus on more than just adding another big-name scorer.

New head coach Jim Hiller could also play a role in the decision. A new coach usually looks for players who can fit specific roles quickly. Toronto will need to decide if Kane’s scoring ability is worth any concerns about team balance and future roster plans.

Right now, the connection between Toronto and Kane looks more like an early discussion than a serious push. The Maple Leafs have shown some interest, Kane has other options, and both sides are still deciding if this could be the right match.

Patrick Kane’s strong performance will keep teams interested in him, and Toronto’s reported contact shows that the Maple Leafs have looked into the possibility of signing him.

However, David Pagnotta’s description of the talks as “very loose” suggests that the discussions are still at an early stage. With Toronto making roster changes and Kane having interest from multiple teams, this situation looks more like simple exploration than a deal that could happen soon.

What do you think? Will Toronto make a serious move for Kane, or will he join another team before camp starts? Let us know in the comments.
