Jason Dickinson, 30, signed a new five-year deal worth $20 million with the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday, June 21. After joining the Oilers in a trade deal from the Chicago Blackhawks on March 4, Dickinson decided to continue with them for the next five seasons.
The Canadian forward had to quickly make up his mind on whether to extend his stay with them or look elsewhere with the unrestricted free agency looming large on July 1.
“BIG JASON ENERGY,” wrote the Oilers in a post on their official X account to confirm Dickinson reaching a deal to play for them till the 2030-31 season.
“It gave me a chance to experience the city and the excitement that comes with everything, and also feel the environment and the culture they’ve developed there,” said Dickinson about arriving in Edmonton earlier this year after signing the new contract today.
Dickinson said that his wife, Alandra, played an important role in their decision to stay in Edmonton for the long term.
“She liked the city, and she liked what she saw, so it was easy. I didn’t even have to convince her; she was on board from the beginning,” he noted.
Notably, before joining the Oilers over three months ago, Dickinson played 64 regular-season games for the Blackhawks, scoring 17 points (7G / 10A) for them.
He competed in 17 regular-season games for the Oilers, registering four points for one goal and three assists. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2026, he managed to get three points (2G / 1A) in four games against the Anaheim Ducks.
The Oilers lost to the Ducks in six games in the first round of the playoffs in the Western Conference in April. Dickinson is likely to play as a third-line center for the Oilers at the start of the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Dickinson suffered a leg injury towards the end of the 2025-26 regular season while playing for the Edmonton Oilers against the San Jose Sharks on April 8.
He missed the last three games of the regular season before returning for Game 1 of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Anaheim Ducks. He played a key role in the 4-3 win for the Oilers with two goals on April 20 before sitting out the next two games, which they lost.
On his return in Game 4 of the playoff series, his assist wasn’t enough since the Ducks won 4-3. He didn’t get any points in the Game 5 win and Game 6 loss for the Oilers, respectively, to exit the competition.
“I broke my fibula, I fractured it right at my ankle bone,” Dickinson said about his injury. “It wasn’t weight-bearing, but it was very swollen and quite painful to put into a hockey skate.”
He revealed that the recovery process didn’t require surgery, and it bodes well for him for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
“It just healed naturally,” Dickinson remarked. “It was all in place, there was no concern, so they said to let it heal the way it needs to heal and do the rehab that’s necessary.”
