The New York Islanders have added Evan Gold to their hockey operations staff. He will serve as Assistant General Manager and General Manager of the Hamilton Hammers, the team's new AHL affiliate. General manager Mathieu Darche wants to strengthen the front office and improve player development.

Gold joined the Islanders after his contract with the Boston Bruins ended on August 1. Chris Lamoriello will now focus on player personnel and scouting instead of running the AHL team. After announcing the move, Darche explained why the Islanders chose Gold for the job.

“Evan brings a rare combination of experience, intelligence, and results to our Hockey Operations department”, Darche said. 

Evan McLeod, in a report for Gino Hard, said he also talked about Gold’s experience and what he brings to the table. 

“Over the past several years, he has excelled in nearly every facet of building a successful franchise at the NHL and AHL levels, from contract negotiations and cap management to leading the Providence Bruins to the best record in the AHL this past season.”

Gold has a lot of experience for this job. He spent 11 years with the Boston Bruins after joining the team in 2015 as Director of Legal Affairs for Hockey Operations. The Bruins promoted him to Assistant General Manager in 2019 and named him General Manager of Providence in 2023.

Following his appointment, Gold said, “I am incredibly grateful to Mathieu and the entire Islanders ownership group for the opportunity to be part of such a respected franchise and to help build a Stanley Cup champion on Long Island.”

Gold gives the Islanders another experienced executive. He brings strong knowledge of contracts, the salary cap, and player development as the team begins a new era under Darche.

Gold's AHL Success Could Be Key for Islanders' Prospect Pipeline

The same Gino Hard report by Evan McLeod also said that Gold's job with the Hamilton Hammers is very important. He will lead the AHL team and help develop many of the Islanders' top young players.

Last season, Evan Gold helped Providence finish with the best regular-season record in the AHL. That made him a strong choice to lead Hamilton after the team moved from Bridgeport.

His experience will also help top prospects like Victor Eklund, Cole Eiserman, Kashawn Aitcheson, and Quinn Finley as they begin their professional careers.

The report also said that the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs showed interest in Gold during their searches for a new general manager.

However, both teams picked other candidates. The Islanders then hired Gold for a role where he will help with NHL decisions and AHL player development.

Gold's new job is about more than filling two positions. He will help with salary-cap planning, player development, and other important hockey decisions.
