The hockey community is mourning the loss of former NHL forward Kyle Calder, who passed away at the age of 47. His daughter, Madison Calder, confirmed the sad news on Tuesday morning through an emotional Instagram post.

Born in Mannville, Calder built a professional hockey career that lasted more than a decade and included time with several NHL organizations. He was selected in the fifth round (130th overall) of the 1997 NHL draft.

Before turning pro, he played for the Regina Pats in the WHL. He later started his professional career with the Cleveland Lumberjacks in the IHL and then joined the Norfolk Admirals in the AHL, where he continued working toward the NHL.

Kyle Calder became best known for his years with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he built a reputation as a hardworking winger who could also contribute offensively. During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, he played for Sodertalje SK in Sweden before returning to North America.

His time with Chicago ended in 2006 when the Blackhawks traded him to the Philadelphia Flyers for Michal Handzus. Less than a year later, Calder was involved in another major trade.

At the 2007 NHL trade deadline, a three-team deal sent him back to Chicago, but the Blackhawks quickly traded him again to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Jason Williams.

Kyle Calder made an immediate impact after joining the Detroit Red Wings. In his first game with Detroit against his former team, the Chicago Blackhawks, he scored only 1 minute and 45 seconds into the game on a pass from Johan Franzen.

Calder went on to record five goals and nine assists in 19 regular-season games with the Red Wings.

Calder Enjoyed a Long NHL Career Across Multiple Organizations 

Although Kyle Calder spent only a short time with the Detroit Red Wings, he helped the team during its 2007 playoff run. He recorded one assist in 13 playoff games as Detroit reached the Western Conference Final.

After the season, the Red Wings decided not to bring him back. Calder then signed a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings.

He later spent time in both the Kings and Anaheim Ducks organizations before finishing his professional career in the KHL, where he played 13 games for Barys Astana.

Over 590 NHL games, Kyle Calder scored 114 goals and added 180 assists for a total of 294 points. He also recorded three points in 18 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Calder never became a superstar, but he earned respect around the league as a reliable forward. He built a long NHL career through hard work, versatility, and determination.

His passing is a sad loss for the hockey community, as former teammates, fans, and organizations remember the impact he made both on and off the ice.
