The Toronto Maple Leafs’ winger, Matthew Knies, has been the talk of the town in the NHL trade market. The young winger emerged as one of the most talked-about players in the trade rumor market.
A few teams are looking for potential roster changes, and the $46.5 million forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs has drawn significant attention. Matthew Knies, a young winger, is known for his physical presence and offensive upside.
Reports indicate that the New Jersey Devils emerged as a serious suitor during the recent wave of speculation. Another team mentioned in connection with the situation is the Montreal Canadiens. However, their involvement appeared less direct.
League insider Chris Johnston suggested that the connection between Montreal and Knies may have been overstated by speculation.
“I don’t believe I think people are erring by connecting the two. The deal that went down to the wire, supposedly, that the Canadiens were working on before the deadline, and then the fact that they had interest in Matthew Knies.”
Johnston said Montreal is eyeing development, and the trade rumors of Knies are two different things altogether. “I think it’s two separate things.”
Knies could be a valuable asset for the teams, but the Leafs have decided to stay patient at the moment. They have not traded the 23-year-old yet.
Stick with Matthew Knies or Reshape the Roster for the Future?
Now, the Toronto Maple Leafs had the bigger picture to look at. They could either sell a few players and bring in some new faces, or they had an option of sticking with their old guns.
The team chose the latter and did not trade Matthew Knies. Now the trade deadline for this season has passed. The team might want to invest in the youngster and view him as a long-term asset.
Currently, the Leafs are at No. 8 in the Wild Card standings, with 75 points.
At such a young age, he has already proven himself. He has demonstrated the ability to contribute in high-pressure situations. This season, he has played 71 games and scored 59 points. That includes 20 goals and 39 assists.
His growing market demand shows just how important he can be to any team. As the offseason approaches, Knies is expected to remain a prominent name in trade conversations.
It will be interesting to see if he stays with Toronto or becomes a part of the blockbuster deal in the future.
