The Vegas Golden Knights and their coach, John Tortorella, found themselves in trouble. The NHL imposed a $100,000 fine and the forfeiture of Vegas' second round pick in 2026 for ‘flagrant violations’ of playoff media formalities during the Golden Knights' Game 6 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

Tortorella was recently asked about this in a press conference, and his response was stoic.

“Well, we put out a statement as an organization, so we will go by that. So we have no more comment on that.”

This move became newsworthy due to the significant punishment imposed on the organization and the heavy penalty placed on such a well-known coach. It all took place after a series-clinching victory that moved the team to the Western Conference finals.

Instead of rehashing the matter, Tortorella stayed on point and focused on the next game.

“It’s not just about the X’s and O’s and all. It’s how you feel and the confidence level you have. I think we’re in a good spot.”

Even with the heavy sanctions over the club, this public gesture showed that the group was intent on protecting its own reputation. But the question remains: Why was the NHL involved in this?

Why the NHL stepped in

But Tortorella’s reputation goes back much further than this incident. He is known as one of the toughest coaches who has a Stanley Cup ring, and he has a history of not getting along with the press. 

As Reuters and the NHL reported, the reason behind the punishment is that Tortorella did not speak to the press after the 5-1 victory in Game 6, the team did not open up the locker room to the press, and they failed to comply with media policies during the playoffs.

It should be noted that the NHL stated that the Vegas Golden Knights had already been issued a warning regarding their failure to meet media policies during the playoffs.

Others pointed out that the conflict was related to the suspension of Brayden McNabb in a previous incident that had put Vegas and the league under the spotlight amid the playoffs.

This situation has created a stir across the league since it involves two areas that the NHL is very serious about: the right of access to the playoffs and club compliance.

Either way, Knights are headed to the next round with this etched as part of their playoff story.
