The NHL gave a major punishment to the Vegas Golden Knights after the team broke the league's media rules following its playoff series win over the Anaheim Ducks.
NHL rules require teams to make players and coaches available to the media during the playoffs. But the Vegas Golden Knights did not follow the normal postgame media rules after winning Game 6, as the incident quickly became one of the biggest off-ice stories of the playoffs.
Vegas authorities reportedly limited player availability for the post-match media sessions, with Mitch Marner, Brett Howden, and Shea Theodore being the only ones available. Head coach John Tortorella also missed his scheduled media session, which led to the NHL taking away the side's second-round pick in the 2026 Draft.

According to NBC Sports, the league also fined Tortorella a $100,000. NHL authorities mentioned that the side's misconduct comes under "flagrant violations," which means the team clearly broke serious league rules.
“The imposition of these penalties comes after previous warnings were issued to the Club regarding their compliance with the Media Regulations and other associated policies,” the NHL said in a statement.
The NHL had already warned the Vegas Golden Knights about following media rules. And hence, the failure caused the league to impose heavy punishment this time. Reports also said John Tortorella did not join the post-series handshake line.
Why Did the Vegas Golden Knights Break NHL Media Rules After Their Playoff Win?
Nothing can be documented on why the Vegas Golden Knights and coach John Tortorella avoided media duties. But reports from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman say the team felt frustrated after Brayden McNabb received a one-game suspension due to an in-game action.
McNabb was suspended for one game after a dangerous interference hit on Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Poehling where he was given a major penalty and game misconduct.
Leagues value the media a lot because media coverage works like free promotion for the sport. The NFL usually does not take such strict action for these violations. But this time, they sent a strong message that media obligations cannot be ignored.
And by issuing such a severe punishment, the NHL probably wants to imply that no team is above league rules.
Vegas now has the option to appeal the decision, and more developments could emerge in the coming days as the organization responds publicly.
