The Vegas Golden Knights have reached the 2026 Stanley Cup Final dramatically under new head coach John Tortorella. Tortorella quickly changed the team’s style and brought more intensity, structure, and urgency. And the result is in front of everyone.
Tortorella became only the third coach in NHL history to take a team to the Stanley Cup Final after joining in their final 10 games of the season. The other two coaches to do this were Roger Neilson, who did it with Vancouver in 1982 but lost 4–0 to the Islanders, and Larry Robinson, who did it with New Jersey in 2000 and won the Final 4–2 against Dallas.
This shows how rare Tortorella’s achievement is in NHL history. He replaced Bruce Cassidy on March 29, 2026. After that, the Vegas Golden Knights won their first game 4–2 against the Vancouver Canucks. They finished the regular season 7–0–1, winning the Pacific Division.
In the playoffs, they kept winning with strong defense and deep scoring. They beat the Utah Mammoths in Round 1 and the Anaheim Ducks in Round 2. In the Western Conference Final, they shocked the Colorado Avalanche with a 4–0 sweep and secured a spot in the Stanley Cup Final.
The Vegas Golden Knights are now getting ready for the Stanley Cup Final. John Tortorella is becoming the main story of their playoff run.
His strong coaching style and focus on accountability have improved the team and made the Knights very dangerous at the right time. The team has already won a cup recently in the 2022-23 season and is now just one win away from another title in four years.
Coaching Journey of John Tortorella and NHL Legacy
John Tortorella is known as one of the most impactful coaches in NHL history. His strong style and defensive system have often helped weak teams become playoff teams in a short time.

He also coached the New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Philadelphia Flyers, and the USA national team.
John Tortorella has added another big moment to his coaching career with the Vegas Golden Knights. He quickly adapted in the middle of the season, brought structure, and improved team performance during the 2026 campaign.
