When a young player starts playing in the NHL, especially in the playoffs, people usually do not expect them to become the team’s main player right away. But in the case of Porter Martone, it has been different.
Porter Martone is rewriting the NHL record books. The 19-year-old forward just joined a select group of a dozen players to score in their first two career playoff games. His breakout performance for the Philadelphia Flyers has already altered the series momentum.
On such a big stage like the NHL playoffs, most expectations are placed on experienced senior players. But Porter Martone has played a key role in his first two games of the playoffs for the Philadelphia Flyers.
He scored goals in both games against the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 18 and 20, respectively. He is only the 12th teenager to score a goal in his first two postseason games.
There are only a few young players who made such a huge impact in the playoffs. That’s why this achievement is special for the 19-year-old Martone. In Game 1, he scored his first playoff goal at 17:23 in the third period. Then, his second goal in Game 2 came at 13:39 in the second period.
The Flyers have won both games, 3-2 and 3-0, respectively. Martone is now one of the key forwards for the team. He has also helped the team reach the playoffs this season. In the NHL 2025-26 regular season, he scored 10 points in 9 games, including 4 goals and 6 assists.
The Athletic Background of Porter Martone
Before joining the NHL, Porter Martone played for the Michigan State Spartans men’s team in college hockey. In 35 games, he scored 50 points, including 25 goals and 25 assists.
Apart from the points, he also racked up 78 penalty minutes while posting an impressive plus-24 rating. These numbers show how good he was at the junior level as well. He was a performer and got the reward for his outstanding run in college hockey.
Earlier, the Philadelphia Flyers picked the 19-year-old as the 6th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. He scored his first NHL point against the Detroit Red Wings.
Martone is a high-potential young star with a bright NHL future. If he continues to play like this, we might see a hat-trick as well (him scoring goals in three consecutive playoff games).
The next game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins will be on April 22 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
