Switzerland will be without one of their top forwards for a big game. Timo Meier has been suspended for one game by the IIHF. He will miss the World Championship semifinal against Norway on Saturday.
The suspension stems from an incident in the quarter-final. Switzerland beat Sweden 3-1 on Thursday. Late in the second period, Meier delivered a knee-on-knee hit on Sweden forward Oskar Sundqvist.
The IIHF Disciplinary Panel reviewed the play closely. They found that Meier broke Rule 50, which covers kneeing. The panel said the contact was not unavoidable.
Video showed Sundqvist moving to his right to avoid a body check. Instead of letting him pass, Meier adjusted and extended his knee. That led to the dangerous leg-on-leg collision.
"While the Panel acknowledges that Meier did not intend to injure his opponent, the extension of his knee created dangerous contact and endangered the safety of the opposing player," the panel said. The one-game ban was the final ruling. Meier will sit out Game 61 against Norway.
The timing is brutal for Switzerland. Meier is tied for fourth in tournament scoring with three goals and 11 points in eight games. He has been one of their best forwards all tournament.
Switzerland finished the round-robin with a perfect 7-0 record. They are chasing their first ever gold medal at the World Championship. They lost in the gold medal game in both 2024 and 2025.
The 29-year-old Meier plays for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL. He had 24 goals and 44 points in 77 games this season. This is his fifth time representing Switzerland at the World Championship.
What the Fans Are Saying
Many fans were not happy with the one-game suspension. They felt the punishment did not match the severity of the hit. Social media lit up with strong reactions.
"Embarrassing he should be banned for the rest of the tournament and same with the refs," one fan wrote. Others felt the call on the ice was just as bad as the suspension. "How can this happen in a semi final with all the technology that you have today? It's a f***** joke," another fan said.
Some fans took it even further with their frustration. "Give the gold to Switzerland and stop the championship," one wrote sarcastically. The sense was that the ruling unfairly favoured the Swiss side.
Others focused on the danger of the play itself. "1 game for an intentional hit that could be career ending, but hey gotta get the Swiss that gold," one fan posted. Another said the punishment should have been much heavier. "A disgusting hit—absolutely terrible referees. 5 + 20 and a 5-game suspension."
The reaction online has been loud and clear. For many fans, one game just is not enough.
