The Toronto Maple Leafs got defenseman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a sign-and-trade deal on June 19. 

Raddysh signed an eight-year contract before being sent to the Maple Leafs in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Toronto has been working on reshaping its defensive group for the 2026-27 season for a while now.

For Raddysh, this is way beyond a trade, "It means the world," he said in a video posted by Sportsnet on X. "My brother and I grew up being Leafs fans. We go with our dad to watch the games and to be able to put that jersey on and play in front of the home fans, it's awesome.”

He further added, “A lot of friends and family have already texted me and are excited. I'm super excited as well."

Raddysh also revealed that his father had recently passed away, and clearly, this move means a lot more for him. He also admitted that playing in Toronto every night is a way to look back at the memories they shared at the arena.

Raddysh spent his entire NHL career with Tampa Bay. He scored a total of 143 points in 249 regular-season games. This past season was his personal best to date; he made 22 goals, 48 assists, and scored 70 points in 73 games. Darren also holds a plus-21 rating and 22:42 of average ice time per night.

Despite having such numbers on record, his time in Tampa Bay has come to an end. He was being used as a seventh defenseman, and the Lightning had different plans for themselves. 

Now he joins Toronto, the same team that finished 15th in the NHL last season and made the second-most goals per game in the league. The Maple Leafs are expecting Raddysh to add value at both the ends.

Why Did Chayka Wanted Raddysh?

Toronto was quick to close the deal, as Chakya has expressed his interest well enough.

"It came together pretty quickly, but the opportunity to secure, in our opinion, a top free agent is an organizational win," general manager John Chayka told Mapleleafhotstove.

He also mentioned the risks that come with it. "It's an aggressive move, it's not without risk, of course, but we just felt, given the stage we are at and what he brings to the table, we felt it was worth pursuing."

Chayka expresses that he did his research and evaluation before this move, and that it extends well beyond the statistics. "The point production is a part of any player's value, but the part of the value we were most focused on was his ability to impact the game holistically," he said.

Chayka also called Raddysh "a weapon," saying that a right-handed point shot fits perfectly into the Maple Leafs ’ power play.

With the addition of defenseman Emil Andrae and the hiring of Jim Hiller as head coach, the Raddysh is clearly rebuilding the front office with a plan and motive.
