Jack Roslovic signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, July 1, the first day of the NHL Free Agency, after leaving the Edmonton Oilers. With that, the 29-year-old forward, who has ten seasons of experience in the NHL, will reunite with his friend and Maple Leafs captain, Auston Matthews.

Just a day after joining Toronto, during his media availability, Roslovic was asked about his relationship with Matthews and his thoughts on playing together with him very soon.

“Stoked. It’s going to be awesome,” said Roslovic about his expectation of taking the ice side-by-side with the 28-year-old forward Matthews in the Maple Leafs colors as posted by Toronto's YouTube channel on July 2. “[I’m] really familiar with his game, really familiar with the person and who he is as a guy and as a leader. I’ve seen him grow in a lot of ways, and I’ve been able to be on his journey a little bit from the outside.”

Notably, Roslovic and Matthews’ relationship stems from their time spent together at the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) for two seasons. They played together for the USNTDP’s U-17 and U-18 teams during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, respectively.

It led to Roslovic getting selected as the No. 25 pick in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft by the Winnipeg Jets. Meanwhile, Matthews waited for another year before he was selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft by the Maple Leafs.

During the same media availability, Roslovic also spoke about the ease of staying in touch with Matthews despite not playing together since the USNTDP days over 11 years ago.

“Every time we get a chance to be able to talk, picking up the phone has been super easy. It just feels like we left off where we started,” he said in the same interview. “I am really excited to be a teammate of his and work with him every day, like we did a couple of years ago, and have a seamless transition with him.”

While Roslovic expects his association with Matthews to be “awesome,” he has taken a long road in the NHL before arriving in Toronto.

Jack Roslovic’s NHL career: A brief breakdown

After the Winnipeg Jets drafted him in the NHL in 2015, Roslovic has played 10 seasons in the league for five teams. Apart from the Jets, he has been a part of the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, and, recently, the Edmonton Oilers.

Roslovic made his NHL debut with the Jets on April 16, 2017, against the Blue Jackets. During his four-season stay in Winnipeg, he competed in 180 regular-season games for 67 points (26G / 41A) along with five assists in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The next four seasons of his career at the Blue Jackets were the most fruitful for Roslovic while playing for a single team in his career. In his 246 regular-season appearances for them, he scored 146 points (51G / 95A), as per NHL.com, while never making the playoff stage.

His short stint at the Rangers was towards the end of the 2023-24 season after leaving the Blue Jackets, in which he played 35 games, including 16 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

After joining the Hurricanes for the 2024-25 season, Roslovic accumulated 39 points (22G / 17A) in 81 games before contributing four points (1G / 3A) in nine playoff games. In the recently concluded 2025-26 season, he got 36 points (21G / 15A) in 69 games and one assist in six games in the playoffs.

His overall stats read: 296 points (123G / 173A) in 595 regular-season games and 18 points (3G / 15A) in 51 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
