The trade situation of Jason Robertson has taken another major turn ahead of the NHL Draft. New reports say the Dallas Stars forward said no to another possible trade destination, even after the team received a strong offer.
Robertson has become one of the biggest names of the offseason, with several teams trying to trade for the 26-year-old winger.
According to Jeff Marek, the St. Louis Blues made a strong offer to get Robertson from the Stars. The package reportedly included multiple first-round draft picks. However, Marek said the trade did not happen because Robertson did not want to sign with St. Louis.
Robertson's decision about where he wants to sign has become an important part of trade talks. Teams interested in him want to know that he will stay with them after a trade.
It is learnt from The Hockey News’ report that Marek's report came soon after Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman shared another update. Friedman said the Seattle Kraken and the Dallas Stars had agreed to a trade in principle.
He also reported that Seattle offered Robertson an eight-year, $120 million contract worth $15 million per season. However, Robertson decided not to accept the offer.
Reports also say Robertson told the Ottawa Senators that he would not sign a long-term contract with them. He also reportedly turned down contract offers from the Stars, although they were not as valuable as those from Seattle or St. Louis.
Because of these decisions, Robertson's future has become one of the biggest stories of the NHL offseason.
Blues quickly shift focus after Robertson's setback
The Hockey News also reported that the St. Louis Blues have started looking at other players after missing out on Jason Robertson. One player getting a lot of attention is Anaheim Ducks center Mason McTavish.
Pierre LeBrun reported that both the Blues and the New York Rangers have made offers for McTavish. Anaheim is reportedly asking for a first-round draft pick in return. Blues general manager Doug Armstrong has also said the team may not keep all of its early draft picks. This shows St. Louis is ready to make a big trade.
Frank Seravalli also reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs tried to join the earlier trade talks between the Seattle Kraken and the Dallas Stars. The Leafs reportedly offered Matthew Knies to Dallas in an effort to get Seattle's No. 7 overall draft pick.
Andy Strickland also reported that the Blues are trying to move higher in the draft. They could try to get the No. 2 overall pick. Robertson may no longer be an option, but St. Louis still wants to make a big move before the draft.
The Blues still have valuable draft picks and are interested in several top players. Because of that, they remain one of the busiest teams in NHL trade talks this offseason.
