Veteran defenseman John Carlson has reportedly left the door open for a potential return to the Anaheim Ducks. This shows both sides may want to continue working together after this season and ahead of NHL free agency.

The Ducks brought Carlson in through a trade earlier this season. Since then, he has become an important part of their defense.

Even in the later stage of his career, he has provided steady defense, power-play support, and strong leadership to a young Ducks' team. Carlson said he is open to staying and willing to consider a Ducks extension.

“Yeah, I mean, I’m open for sure,” Carlson said. “I think there’s no bones about that.”

He also said the team, players, and organization are entering an exciting phase and sees Anaheim as a special, growing franchise.

“I think this is a special place that is coming into a special time with the players here, and the organization, and all that,” Carlson stated.

Reports state the negotiations have already begun between John Carlson and the Anaheim Ducks at an early stage.

Although nothing is official, both sides are open to a possible contract extension if the monetary terms and contract length work for them.

Carlson is 36 years old, and his current contract will end after the season, making him an unrestricted free agent. If he signs a contract with the Anaheim Ducks, it will be the first time he signs with a team other than the Washington Capitals.

In 28 total regular-season and playoff games with the Anaheim Ducks, John Carlson scored 20 points with four goals and 16 assists. He struggled in the series against the Vegas Golden Knights and recorded only one assist.

Carlson stated he enjoys his time in Anaheim and sees the team as a strong, promising group. He feels staying is an attractive option because of the talent and future potential.

“So that certainly is attractive to anyone, not just myself. So, from that standpoint, that’s what I would say," Carlson stated. "But there’s more to it than that, of course, with everything else.”

According to AFP Analytics, John Carlson is expected to sign a three-year contract with a $7.03 million salary cap hit. PuckPedia reported that the Washington Capitals will have about $36.6 million in salary cap space this offseason.

Getting John Carlson could be a good move for the Anaheim Ducks. He can help young players, and his experience can be very important for the team.
