Trade rumors have followed Matthew Knies throughout the offseason, but John Chayka finally spoke about them on Friday. As the Toronto Maple Leafs look for ways to improve their roster after missing the playoffs, Knies has become a popular name in trade speculation.
The 23-year-old winger is entering the second year of his seven-year contract, which carries a $7.75 million cap hit and does not include any trade-protection clauses.
His age, production, and contract situation make him one of Toronto’s most valuable assets. However, Chayka made it clear that although the team considers all options, trading Knies is not something they are actively looking to do.
“As my job as general manager, we're gonna evaluate everything,” Chayka said. “The idea that we're gonna improve the roster by moving, you know, a top young player, yeah, anything's possible.”
Those comments show the difficult position the Toronto Maple Leafs front office faces. Many teams would likely be interested in acquiring a young power forward like Matthew Knies, who has the potential to play on a top line. However, Toronto knows how valuable he is to the organization.
John Chayka reinforced that view when he spoke about the chances of a trade actually happening.
“I guess it's not probable,” Chayka said. “But as we think about our team and, you know, how we improve, that's a tough bar to hurdle.”
Those comments suggest the Toronto Maple Leafs would consider trading Matthew Knies only if they received an exceptional offer. Considering his age, importance to the team, and future potential, it would likely take a very large return for Toronto to seriously consider a deal.
Matthew Knies has become too valuable to replace
It is easy to understand why the Toronto Maple Leafs are reluctant to move Matthew Knies when looking at his recent progress.
The former second-round pick is coming off the best season of his NHL career, scoring 23 goals and adding 43 assists for 66 points. He set new career highs in both assists and total points while strengthening his position as one of Toronto’s key players.
Knies also provides value beyond scoring. He plays top-line minutes, works on the first power-play unit, helps on the penalty kill when needed, and brings a physical style that few forwards on the roster can offer.
His strong play has continued into the playoffs as well. During the 2024–25 postseason, Matthew Knies scored five goals and recorded seven points in 13 games, showing again that he can perform in serious situations.
His mix of scoring, physical play, and playoff success is why other teams are interested in him. It is also why the Toronto Maple Leafs do not seem eager to trade him.
While rumors may continue, John Chayka’s comments suggest Toronto sees Knies as an important part of the team’s future, not a player they are actively trying to move.
Will Matthew Knies remain untouchable, or could the Toronto Maple Leafs eventually consider a blockbuster trade offer for one of their most valuable young stars?
