John Garrett, Longtime NHL Broadcaster and Former Goalie, Passes at 74

The hockey world has lost a beloved voice in the game and a former NHL goaltender, John Garrett, who passed away at 74.

On April 28, (Tuesday), Sportsnet announced that the former goalie and broadcaster, John Garrett, died suddenly. The cause of death has not been revealed.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of John Garrett, a beloved colleague, friend, and one of the most familiar voices in Canadian hockey,” Sportsnet said in a statement. 

Garrett was known for his warmth, humor, and deep understanding of hockey. He left a huge impact both on and off the ice.

Before starting a broadcasting journey, he used to play professional hockey (NHL) and represented several teams like the Vancouver Canucks, Quebec Nordiques, and Hartford Whalers. 

In his NHL career, he played 207 regular-season games, recording 6,244 SA with a save percentage of .866. 

John Garrett also played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) and built a strong career as a goalie.

In 1983, he also achieved a big honor when he was selected for the NHL All-Star Game at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

After he finished his playing career, he started working in broadcasting in 1986. He became very popular as a color commentator for the Vancouver Canucks.

He worked with the team’s broadcasts for around 20 years and became a well-known voice among hockey fans.

His commentary style was considered funny, energetic, and insightful. Losing a personality like John Garrett is a big loss to the hockey fraternity.

The NHL commissioner, Gary Bettman, expressed shock over John Garrett’s death and praised his analysis that guided fans for decades.

"The National Hockey League family is stunned and saddened by the sudden passing of John Garrett, whose astute analysis took fans, particularly in Western Canada, inside our game for the last four decades," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said.

Sportsnet also expressed deep sadness, calling John Garrett a beloved colleague, friend, and iconic voice in Canadian hockey.

Garrett was a very friendly, funny, and kind person. Fans and colleagues loved him and respected his voice. 

He spoke simply and warmly, and that’s why people enjoyed listening to him. His commentary helped fans feel connected to the game and understand it better.

On April 27, 2026, John Garrett was found dead in his hotel room in Salt Lake City at age 74. He was working as a Sportsnet analyst during the first-round playoff series. 

John Garrett's legacy in hockey will endure through the countless games he called and the fans he inspired. He will be remembered as one of the sport’s most cherished voices.
