After a 4-2 finals series loss against the Carolina Hurricanes, John Tortorella won’t return as head coach for the Vegas Golden Knights. General Manager Kelly McCrimmon announced on Tuesday, June 16.
Tortorella had joined Vegas as a replacement for Bruce Cassidy in March 2026. On June 16, McCrimmon released an official statement regarding the HC's departure. He recognized Tortorella's contribution to the team in his short tenure, per the NHL website.
“We thank 'Torts' for the guidance he provided our team since joining the organization in March... Torts' experience and leadership proved to be the boost that we were looking for, helping guide us to the Stanley Cup Final.”

Tortorella's impact was immediate: a 7-0-1 close to the regular season, then a Finals run in two-and-a-half months. Tortorella's vision almost led the Golden Knights to their second title.
“We are grateful for Torts' passion, sincerity, and commitment to our organization, and we wish him and his family the best,” McCrimmon concluded in his statement.
Vegas lost Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final on June 14 against the Hurricanes. Tortorella was asked about his future with the franchise post-game.
“I haven't even … I've got to swallow this a little bit,” he remarked, per NHL.
After the exit announcement, Golden Knights alternate captain and center Jack Eichel expressed appreciation for Tortorella. He called it an honor to play for him.
Ryan Craig, the Henderson Silver Knights head coach, is slated to replace Tortorella. But Tortorella is not done with coaching in the NHL.
What is John Tortorella’s Record and Future in the NHL?
John Tortorella has as impressive a resume as any NHL head coach. He has worked with five teams over 24 seasons for a 777-648-166 record (37 ties).
He was a part of the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, and the Columbus Blue Jackets before joining the Golden Knights this spring.

Emily Kaplan, veteran ESPN hockey reporter, took to her official X account after Tortorella left Vegas. She states that the veretan coach would "come off the bench again" next season.
With an experienced coach like Tortorella available in the market now, some teams might be quite interested in having him on board for the new NHL season.
Apart from the Golden Knights, there are two other franchises already in the market for a head coach.
The Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs could see the latest development as an opportunity to fill their head coach vacancy, but nothing is for certain right now.
