The Tampa Bay Lightning General Manager (GM), Julien BriseBois, recently ended the speculations about the future of head coach Jon Cooper. Amid growing media discussion, BriseBois made it clear that Cooper remains a central part of the franchise’s long-term vision.
Questions were raised about Jon Cooper’s coaching future after the Tampa Bay Lightning lost Game 7 in Round 1 against the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday. This loss also marked the Lightning’s fourth straight first-round exit.
BriseBois addressed the issue of Cooper's future in the franchise during the end-of-season press conference. He said, It was a big, big year for him. When you start putting it in context like that, yeah, it’s amazing what he’s been able to do. Again, I know in our business we put a lot of emphasis on the head coach. I’m certainly not taking anything away from Coop."

Cooper managed injuries, roster changes, and pressure while keeping the Lightning competitive throughout a tough season.
“It was a big, big year for him,” BriseBois said. “When you start putting it in context like that, yeah, it’s amazing what he’s been able to do.
BriseBois also emphasized that coaching success is a collective effort. He praised Cooper’s but also highlighted the strong assistant staff supporting team performance and overall system.
“I know in our business we put a lot of emphasis on the head coach. I’m certainly not taking anything away from Coop. You know my affection and admiration for Coop. But it’s a staff, right? I know he’s got a really good staff with him that helps him, that supports him. All of those guys bring a lot to the table.”
Jon Cooper is the longest-serving current coach in the NHL. He became the Lightning’s coach on March 25, 2013. And as per the words of Julien BriseBois, this situation is not going to change anytime soon.
Long-Term Vision of Julien BriseBois: Building Lightning’s Future Core for Years Ahead
Julien BriseBois said the Tampa Bay Lightning is planning for the future and building a long-term team. He said the roster did not change much when the team won the Cup, but now the team is going through many changes.
“There wasn’t a lot of turnover in Year 1 and Year 2 between those two cup teams,” BriseBois said about the team’s evolution over the past few years. “But after that, there was a significant changeover.”
The GM prioritizes long-term contributors, valuing young players who provide sustained success over short-term one-year rental additions for roster stability.
“So a player who can help me win for four years is more valuable than a player who can only help me for one year. So, when we have those young guys, and we can count on them for many years, they’re extremely valuable, and we’re trying to get as many of them into the fold as possible.”
The Tampa Bay Lightning is going through a transition phase right now. But this does not mean the coaching staff should be changed. Julien BriseBois saying that the coach will stay long-term shows that the team believes in stability and long-term planning.
The team won the Stanley Cup in 2019–20 and 2020–21 under coach Jon Cooper. They also reached the final the following year. So, when the team stayed together during successful years, it made sense to keep the same coach even during this transition phase.
So, now that BriseBois has cleared the air, do you think Cooper will be able to lead the Lightning to better results in the next season?
