Macklin Celebrini Nears Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby's Teen NHL Record

A new name is chasing NHL history. Teenage star Macklin Celebrini just joined Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby in the record books for single-season scoring. His performance has put him in truly elite company.

The 19-year-old has already shown glimpses of what’s coming next, as he becomes the third-highest teenage scorer in only his 2nd season.

In just his 2nd season, Macklin Celebrini has become the third-highest scoring teenager in a single NHL season. He is only behind Wayne Gretzky and Sydney Crosby.

This season, while playing for the San Jose Sharks, the 19-year-old forward has played 77 games and scored 108 points. It includes 42 goals and 66 assists. In his first season, he played 70 games and scored 63 points, with 25 goals and 38 assists.

Wayne Gretzky, in the 1979-80 season, scored 137 points with 51 goals and 86 assists. He played for the Edmonton Oilers when he was 18 years old.

Sydney Crosby, in the 2006-07 season, scored 120 points with 36 goals and 84 assists. He achieved this feat while playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

So, Celebrini is now the third in this list. His remarkable season shows his consistency, confidence, and maturity. At such a young age, he has been the key player for his team.

His ability to create scoring opportunities, handle the puck effectively, and succeed under pressure has resulted in him being compared to other generational players who had an immediate impact as soon as they entered the NHL.

Does Macklin Celebrini Have a Chance To Break The Record?

Mathematically, it is still possible for him to go past Crosby and Gretzky. But realistically, it is highly unlikely. He needs 13 and 29 points to surpass Crosby and Gretzky, respectively.

To score 29 points in the last phase of the season is highly unlikely. He needs an elite pace to even come close to that mark. Modern NHL is more defensive, with goaltenders also stronger as compared to the previous era.

The Sharks have only 5 games left in the regular season. Right now, Celebrini’s focus will be on reaching the playoffs. They are currently sitting at No. 4 in the Western Wild Card Division with 81 points. Their next game is against the Anaheim Ducks on April 09, 2026.

As the season continues, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how much higher Celebrini can climb on the all-time list.

Whether or not he surpasses Sydney Crosby’s total, his rookie campaign has already established him as one of the brightest young stars in hockey.

The NHL may be witnessing the early stages of another generational career. One that could shape the league for years to come.
