The Toronto Maple Leafs have taken defenseman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL draft.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman first reported this sign-and-trade agreement on Thursday night, with the deal finalized Friday morning. This was expected to be Toronto's top offseason priority before the defenseman could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Raddysh put together an excellent season by making 22 goals and scoring 70 points for Tampa Bay in 2025-26. His skills clearly make him a perfect fit for a Toronto team that restructured its organization this offseason after going through a disappointing season. This includes the appointment of John Chayka as their general manager.
With this deal, Tampa Bay will not be losing Raddysh for nothing once his free agency opens, and they now get a draft pick in return. Toronto fills up a truly needed spot on the blue line without giving up much.
Apart from all this, Raddysh is still a native of the Toronto area and grew up following the Maple Leafs, which gives the player a perfect chance to go back home.
The Maple Leafs confirmed the trade officially on X, with their fifth-round selection passed to Tampa Bay in the return.
Fan reaction shows skepticism rather than greeting the move
Not everyone in the Toronto fanbase was happy with this acquisition. People online gave a really divided response, with them discussing Raddysh's age, contract, and fit within the roster.
Several people questioned the point of signing a 30-year-old to an eight-year deal, saying that his prime is already over.
"An 8-year contract given to a 30-year-old, whose best years are likely behind him? Toronto surrendered yet another valuable draft pick?" one fan wrote.
Others focused on roster gaps, "249 NHL GP at 30 years old. You guys have no goaltender; Raddy only blocked 69 shots playing 22+ mins a game. He will not be out on the PK. 8.5 mil is a bad deal for Toronto. Tampa won, getting a pick for him before they lost him for nothing," one fan posted.
Another said, “This is ridiculous. To give up a 5th round draft pick for a 1 hit wonder that might not even sign. I had greater expectations for this new regime. Total Disappointment setting in."
Some went even further, referencing the trade of Maple Leafs defenseman Cory Cross: “There is your next Corey Cross. Another mistake from Toronto,” and there were other comments like, “Yeah, this organization still is not serious. You guys need new owners asap.”
The reactions reflect the fans' frustration over the team’s repeated mistakes. Although the trade still gives Toronto an elite defenseman at a low cost heading into the offseason.
