Maple Leafs Face Tough Truth as Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres Build for the Future

The Toronto Maple Leafs finished last in the Atlantic Division as their championship window officially closed. While Buffalo and Montreal rise, Toronto’s future now rests on 2026 lottery winner Gavin McKenna.

For many years, the Toronto Maple Leafs have played under pressure to win immediately. With stars like Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander in their prime years, expectations in Toronto remain very high.

But repeated playoff failures have made people question how long this championship window can stay open. At the same time, Montreal and Buffalo are moving in a different direction. The Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres are both seen as young, rising teams in the NHL. Both teams have talented young cores, and both have shown improvement in recent seasons.

While Rasmus Dahlin and Nick Suzuki are earning major NHL award recognition for Buffalo and Montreal, Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs are facing uncertainty after a disappointing season, with trade rumors around Matthews continuing to grow.

The Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres already have strong young stars who are becoming key parts of their teams. Players like Nick Suzuki and Rasmus Dahlin are helping build a bright future that could keep both teams competitive for many years.

This situation creates pressure on the Maple Leafs to maximize their current roster before younger rivals fully mature. From the 2016–17 season until last season, the Toronto Maple Leafs reached the playoffs every year.

In some seasons, the team even advanced past the first round. But they still kept getting eliminated in the playoffs.

This season, Toronto could not even make the playoffs. The team finished last in the Atlantic Division with 78 points and a 32-36-14 record.

Hard Times Ahead for the Toronto Maple Leafs?

The Maple Leafs are in a difficult situation. But the difficult reality for Toronto is that the Atlantic Division may soon become even harder to survive. The division already includes elite contenders like the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning.

If Montreal and Buffalo take the next step over the next few seasons, playoff spots could become far more competitive.

The Leafs have a few promising young players in Matthew Knies and Easton Cowan. They will also have a chance to pick Gavin McKenna after winning the 2026 NHL Lottery Draft. But the team’s defense remains aging and slow, and even adding Darren Raddysh would not fully solve Toronto’s major blue-line problems.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to improve the team by making some important changes. The team appointed John Chayka as the new GM and named Mats Sundin as the senior executive adviser of hockey operations.

Now it will be interesting to see if they can bring positive changes to the team or not. While Toronto fights to keep its championship window alive, division rivals are building teams that could soon challenge it for years to come.
