Maple Leafs GM Sends Message About Coach Craig Berube’s Future in Toronto

The Toronto Maple Leafs have entered a new era with John Chayka taking over as general manager, yet Craig Berube's position as head coach remains under discussion following the GM transition

According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, new GM John Chayka will meet with Craig Berube this weekend to discuss the coach’s future with the Toronto Maple Leafs. LeBrun believes new Maple Leafs GM John Chayka is likely to keep Craig Berube as Toronto’s head coach.

"If I had to handicap it, I think John Chayka will be comfortable keeping Craig Berube as their head coach," LeBrun said on Thursday's edition of OverDrive, according to Manuel Meza of Yardbarker.

John Chayka may break the standard protocol by keeping the current coaching staff in place.

Craig Berube had a successful first season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team won the Atlantic Division in 2024–25 and reached the second round of the playoffs.

The 2025–26 season proved difficult for Toronto, as the team missed the playoffs and finished last in the Atlantic Division with 78 points and a 32-36-14 record.

Because of these poor results, the team fired Brad Treliving and hired John Chayka as the new GM.

John Chayka Takes Over as Maple Leafs General Manager

New GM Chayka will now be focusing on star players Auston Matthews and William Nylander. Both players are still under contract, but recent weeks have sparked speculation about their future in Toronto.

According to Yardbarker, the Maple Leafs' fans showed their skepticism concerning the decisions made by CEO Keith Pelley regarding the appointment of Chayka and the retention of Berube.

Along with the hiring of John Chayka, the team also appointed Mats Sundin as the new senior executive advisor for hockey operations.

MLSE CEO Keith Pelley welcomed Chayka and Sundin, calling them strong hockey minds who will improve the Maple Leafs organization.

"Today is an important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs organization," said MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley last Sunday. "I'm thrilled to welcome John and Mats to their roles, two great hockey minds that will strengthen our entire hockey club."
