The Toronto Maple Leafs have been connected to one of the NHL’s most talked-about veteran defensemen, and the story behind it is hard to ignore.

According to NHL insider Kevin Weekes, Radko Gudas is attracting interest from several teams as he nears unrestricted free agency.

Weekes reported that if Gudas and the Anaheim Ducks do not agree on a new contract, the Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers could become possible destinations.

The veteran defenseman is expected to seek a two- or three-year deal worth between $3.5 million and $4 million per season. For Toronto, though, this potential move is about more than simply adding another defenseman.

Radko Gudas became a controversial figure among Toronto Maple Leafs fans after receiving a five-game suspension for kneeing captain Auston Matthews.

Matthews was involved in one of the team’s biggest stories of the season, which makes the idea of Gudas joining Toronto a surprising one for many fans.

Still, the hockey reasoning behind the rumor is easy to see. The Maple Leafs have spent years looking for a tougher and more physical presence on defense, especially during the playoffs. Gudas has built his NHL career playing exactly that kind of game.

The 36-year-old defenseman brings a physical style, strong leadership, and plenty of experience. While Radko Gudas is not known for his offense, he remains one of the NHL’s toughest defenders and regularly makes things difficult for opposing forwards.

His mix of toughness and experience is a big reason why the rumor has gained attention so quickly. If the Toronto Maple Leafs decide to pursue Gudas, it could signal a major change in both their roster and the way they want the team to play.

Gudas' physical style makes him an intriguing option

From a hockey perspective, Radko Gudas offers many qualities teams want in a veteran defenseman. He finished second among all NHL defensemen in hits during the 2024–25 season, showing once again that he is one of the league’s most physical players.

During his three years with the Anaheim Ducks, he also recorded 420 blocked shots and posted a plus-16 rating, proving his value in defensive situations.

The Florida Panthers may be the more natural fit. Gudas previously played for Florida and helped the team make deep playoff runs. His familiarity with the organization, coaching staff, and teammates could make a return an easy transition.

On the other hand, Toronto would face a much different situation. If the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Radko Gudas, many fans and media members would immediately discuss his past suspension involving Auston Matthews.

However, if the Maple Leafs believe Gudas can improve their defense and add a tougher, more physical style to the team, they may be willing to move past that history.

If a deal happens, it would quickly become one of the most talked-about signings of the offseason and would clearly show the direction Toronto wants to take as a team.
