Max Domi was expected to be an important part of the Toronto Maple Leafs next season. But now his availability is uncertain after a medical update.

The 31-year-old forward is facing problems after offseason surgery. This may keep him out for an unknown time and could delay his start to the new season. On May 25, 2026, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced on their X account that Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he had been managing throughout the 2025–26 NHL season.

Now, he will be out of action for an indefinite time. Another recent X update from the Leafs revealed, “Forward Max Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season. Due to complications arising from the procedure, Domi will be out indefinitely.”

Despite injury, Max Domi played 80 out of 82 regular-season games this season. He showed good durability and stayed consistent throughout the season. The 31-year-old finished with 36 points, including 12 goals and 24 assists. It was his third season with the Maple Leafs. 

Max Domi’s post-surgery complications now put his availability for next season in doubt. This creates another concern for the Toronto Maple Leafs during a time of major change. The Maple Leafs said Domi will stay under close watch by the medical staff. The team will give more updates before training camp.

“Domi will continue working with the club’s medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp.”

Max Domi has played for multiple NHL teams in his career. He has played for Arizona, Montreal, Columbus, Carolina, Chicago, Dallas, and is now playing for Toronto.

Domi has 486 points in 815 games, with 150 goals and 336 assists. He is currently in the third year of his 4-year, $15 million contract signed in 2024.

Max Domi Injury Concern Adds to Toronto’s Season of Struggles and Leadership Reset

The Toronto Maple Leafs had a tough 2025-26 season. They finished last in the Atlantic Division with 78 points, their worst season since 2015–16, and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016–17. This poor result caused head coach Craig Berube to leave and start a big reset in the team.

The new leadership group, including GM John Chayka and senior advisor Mats Sundin, is looking for changes in the overall team structure and roster for the betterment of the team. They also met Captain Auston Matthews to talk about the long-term plan. 

NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman said the talks were positive, and the team is stable inside despite outside pressure. Toronto also got a big boost by winning the top pick in the upcoming NHL Draft. They may pick Penn State star Gavin McKenna, who is expected to go first overall.

But the possible absence of Max Domi is another worry, as it reduces their forward depth for next season. As the Leafs rebuild, Domi’s health and the team’s restructuring remain key storylines before training camp.
