The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking at their roster for next season. One of the relevant questions surrounds veteran defenseman Troy Stecher. 

NHL insider David Pagnotta reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs have had early talks with the pending unrestricted free agent. However, there is no guarantee the two sides will agree on a new contract.

“The Leafs have had preliminary talks with pending UFA defenceman Troy Stecher, but there are no guarantees he’s brought back,” Pagnotta stated, as per NHL Rumour Report.

The update shows that the Toronto Maple Leafs are keeping their options open as they work through a busy offseason that could bring changes to the roster.

Troy Stecher gave the team useful depth on defense throughout the 2025-26 season. The 32-year-old brought experience, consistency, and flexibility whenever the team needed him. While he was not one of Toronto’s biggest stars, he helped strengthen the defense throughout the season.

The two sides have already spoken, suggesting the Leafs see value in bringing Stecher back. The player has expressed the intention to remain in Toronto.

“Who knows what’s going to happen in the offseason with all the change we have,” Stecher said on Leafs Morning Take. “I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, I hope I’m back. I really enjoyed being a Leaf, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

With free agency approaching, the team must decide whether Stecher fits its plans or whether it should look for other options. Right now, a return is still possible, but a new contract has yet to be agreed upon.

Toronto Maple Leafs Exploring Multiple Roster Options

Troy Stecher is just one of several decisions the Toronto Maple Leafs must make this summer. General manager John Chayka has reportedly been talking with teams around the league and gathering information on possible additions, including a middle-six forward, a top-six winger, and several defensemen.

The Maple Leafs are also reviewing players already on the roster, with defenseman Morgan Rielly again being linked to trade rumors.

Numerous sources, including NHL Trade Rumors, have linked him to the San Jose Sharks, who have only two NHL defensemen locked up for next season. Notably, Rielly has yet to determine whether to waive his no-movement clause

There are also questions about Toronto’s goaltending. One of Joseph Woll, Anthony Stolarz, or Dennis Hildeby could become a trade candidate if the Toronto Maple Leafs decide to make changes to the roster.

Defenseman Brandon Carlo is also expected to be involved in trade rumors. Meanwhile, pending unrestricted free agent and center Calle Jarnkrok is not expected to return.

With several roster moves still to be made, Toronto’s decision on Stecher may depend on the rest of the offseason.
