With free agency underway, Toronto Maple Leafs’ General Manager John Chayka had some interesting adjectives to outline his upcoming moves. And none of them sounded light.
“There are some bigger swings we’ll take and look at some things,” the GM told reporters following the 2026 NHL draft. “There are some players we like. There are some needs we have. We will be aggressive, but we will also make sure we are not doing anything to hurt the future.”
With Bobby McMann (Seattle), Scott Laughton (Los Angeles), and Nicolas Roy (Colorado) out, captain Auston Matthews’ contract on the clock and no protection on 2027 and 2028’s first-rounders, Chayka’s urgency to assemble a team that can make it to the playoffs is only natural.

And the budget won’t be a problem, as per Sportsnet’s writer Luke Fox. Chayka traded Simon Benoit, Joseph Woll, and Brandon Carlo, freeing $20.9M in cap space. Even after reserving budget for Toronto’s own RFAs, the team can afford to spend.
So far, the Maple Leafs front office has acquired the 6-foot-1 defenseman Darren Raddysh through a sign-and-trade swap with the Tampa Bay Lightning. His eight-year contract extension worth $8.5 million annually makes him Toronto’s highest-paid defenseman.
Now, to make up for their 28th-overall finish in the 2025-26 season, which other potential players might the Maple Leafs go after?
Potential Targets on Maple Leafs' GM John Chayka's Radar
One thing for sure: the team isn’t just recklessly going to spend. Chayka’s “aggressive swings” will not hurt the team's future and will focus on enhancing depth. And the GM also added this in the same press conference, following the draft.
“It is depth, for the most part,” he said. “Ultimately, it is a two-sided marketplace. There are some smart agents out there who are trying to maximize the value for their players as well. We are going to be disciplined in the marketplace and do our best to make the team the best possible.”
As per the same Sportsnet article by Fox, Chayka might target the Detroit Red Wings' RW Patrick Kane and the Florida Panthers’ goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who are both expected to hit the market. Or he might bring in ex-Leaf Mason Marchment from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Whatever it is, it’ll require wise spending.
