Martin St. Louis again showed his careful approach with the media. The head coach avoided giving a clear answer about the Montreal Canadiens.
When a reporter asked Martin about the areas where the team could improve, the head coach gave a short and unclear response.
“I won’t tell you that,” he said.
When pressed further on whether he could at least identify an area of weakness, he added: “For sure.”
This showed that the coaching staff has clear internal plans, but he did not share details publicly. Now, obviously, the coaches don’t share their strategy or internal problems publicly, especially when they are in the playoffs.
The Canadiens got past Tampa Bay in the first round thanks to strong goaltending from Jakub Dobes and balanced scoring across the lineup, but they did not have one dominant star carrying the offense.
That formula can work for a short series, but Game 1 against Buffalo showed its limits when Dobes struggled, and Montreal lost 4-2.
Montreal now needs to win Game 5 (or Games 6 and 7 if necessary) against Buffalo to stay alive in the 2026 playoffs.
But as for Martin St. Louis, he knows what he’s doing and is having a lot of fun while doing it.
Martin St. Louis Talks About Coaching the Montreal Canadiens
Martin St’ Louis became the coach of the Montreal Canadiens in February 2022. He joined mid-season as the interim head coach, but now in his fourth year, he's absorbing everything that comes with the job.
“It’s still a lot of fun,” he said Monday, talking about the Bell Center. “The support of all the fans. I don’t live far. I walk here.”
The kid who grew up in nearby Laval, Quebec, that same boy, who turned Hall of Fame NHL forward, is now the coach of the beloved Canadiens.
"I grew up about 20 minutes from here, and all my idols were the Canadiens," he added. "I was able to stay up late in the playoffs...watch the whole game. So I was happy when they were going far because there were more nights beyond my bedtime.”
Now, St. Louis is focused on helping the team win Round 2 and move forward. He handles media questions smartly, and his answer about team weaknesses may be a strategic move.
