Melinda French Gates is officially entering professional sports ownership. She will become a minority investor in the Seattle Kraken, pending NHL approval. This will be her first ownership stake in a major sports team.

This move connects her with Seattle’s NHL team and its ownership group, led by majority owner Samantha Holloway. French Gates said the decision was made because she has a strong connection to Seattle and believes in the power of sports to bring people together.

Her investment goes beyond finances, as she also wants to support Samantha Holloway’s leadership and vision for the Seattle Kraken.

“I see this incredible opportunity that sports plays for a community to bring people together,” she said, as per ESPN.

Melinda French Gates said her first meeting with Holloway played a big role in her decision and helped shape her interest in joining the franchise.

“When I met Samantha and learned about her leadership—her background in tech and the innovative way she approaches challenges—it felt like a natural fit for me,” she said.

The Seattle Kraken ownership group includes notable names like former baseball player David Wright, Amazon president Andy Jassy, and film producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

This investment also shows the growing role of women in sports ownership. Melinda French Gates noted the shift and its widespread influence across many industries.

“It’s just time,” she said. “What you’re seeing is a generation of women coming into their full power.”

French Gates also talked about the challenges women face in male-dominated spaces. She said progress happens faster when women are not one of the few, but one of many.

The Seattle Kraken ownership group also has bigger plans for sports in the city. Holloway confirmed that the group is also working to bring an NBA team back to Seattle. They also own a majority stake in Climate Pledge Arena, which helps them plan for future expansion.

On the ice, the Kraken are still focused on getting better. The team has made the playoffs only once in five seasons and finished sixth in the Pacific Division with a 34–37–11 record. To improve, the organization also asked Sportsology to review its hockey operations.

Samantha Holloway admitted the need for improvement, as the franchise is assessing its current operations and prospects.

"It's no secret that we're not thrilled with where we ended the season, and we take that really seriously," she said. "We can talk all day about the work we do in the community, and that's great, but winning does matter.

French Gates also expressed confidence in the team’s future and the strong sports culture in Seattle.

“My hopes and dreams are that they blow the roof off the stadium because they’re so loud because they won a Stanley Cup,” she said.

She said Seattle could become successful within the next 10 years, highlighting the city's already strong sports culture across many teams.
