Mitch Marner's summer recap includes familiar Maple Leafs faces

Mitch Marner spent part of this summer reconnecting with his old friends. The Vegas Golden Knights forward attended former Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen's wedding earlier this month in Copenhagen. He shared a photo from the event on his recent Instagram post.

Andersen married his longtime girlfriend, Annalise Bonesho, on July 18. The wedding brought together several old friends from Andersen's time in Toronto. Auston Matthews and Marner both attended the wedding, holding onto their bond from the time they played together.

Andersen played alongside Matthews and Marner in Toronto from 2016 to 2021. Andersen just won his first Stanley Cup this spring with the Carolina Hurricanes, and defeated Marner's Golden Knights in the Final.

Marner posted several photos from his summer in an Instagram dump. Players change teams, but clearly their friendships held on. Marner and Matthews spent nine seasons together in Toronto before Marner's departure last year.

Marner also posed with other former teammates during the trip, including Justin Holl, now with the Washington Capitals, and free agent Jake Gardiner.

This reunion just shows us how many players Marner crossed paths with during his time in Toronto as he embarked on a new journey in 2025.

Mitch Marner's move from Toronto to Vegas

Marner's Toronto run ended on July 2, 2025. The Maple Leafs traded him to the Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade deal. He signed an eight-year, $96 million contract worth $12 million annually.

Toronto then got forward Nicolas Roy in return. Marner left after nine seasons with the Maple Leafs, after making a career-high record of scoring 102 points in his final year there.

He had spent almost his entire career in Toronto after the team drafted him fourth overall in 2015. But he still got the chance to chase a Stanley Cup in Vegas, despite the result.

Marner had helped lead the team to the Stanley Cup Final, where the team lost against Andersen and the Hurricanes just this last season.

Andersen recently signed with the Edmonton Oilers in free agency on July 1 and is expected to work in a three-goalie system there next season.

As Marner heads into the new season with the Golden Knights, moments like these show a different side of a career that is marked by big trades and the pressure to win.
