The Montreal Canadiens are once again making headlines, but not only because of their exciting playoff run. During their dramatic second-round Stanley Cup series against the Buffalo Sabres, celebrations from Canadiens fans became so loud and intense that seismic sensors reportedly detected a mini earthquakes around Montreal.

According to reports, the Montreal Canadiens’ dramatic 3-2 overtime win in Game 7 on Monday night created small tremors in parts of Montreal. Something similar happened in Game 6 as well. 

Reported by Deadline, Natural Resources Canada seismographs detected activity of around 0.5 on the Richter scale during the May 16 home playoff game and the May 18 away game. The tremors were very small compared to real earthquakes, but scientific equipment still recorded them.

Reports said sensors at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf and McGill University recorded the tremors. Both places are close to the Montreal Canadiens’ home arena, the Bell Centre in downtown Montreal.

The playoff atmosphere around the Bell Centre was extremely energetic during the series. Nearly 21,000 fans filled the arena, while around 20,000 more gathered outside to watch and celebrate together. Every Canadian goal caused huge reactions, with fans jumping, cheering, and shaking the area around the arena.

The strongest seismic reactions came during key moments in the series. In Game 7, the first two goals by the Montreal Canadiens caused big crowd eruptions.

The biggest spike came when Alex Newhook scored the overtime winner in less than 10 minutes, creating another clear seismic reading from thousands of celebrating fans.

Earlier reports also said similar seismic activity happened in other playoff games, with big celebrations after goals by players like Arber Xhekaj, Ivan Demidov, and Jake Evans.

Montreal Canadiens Fans Celebrate Big Win

There were celebrations among the Canadien fans, but not entirely peaceful, especially after the Game 7 victory. Police were called to downtown Montreal and nearby watch parties because crowds got out of control.

Some fans threw trash cans and also used fireworks. Police then used chemical gas in some areas to manage the situation and calm the crowd.

Even with the trouble, the moment showed how strong hockey passion is in Montreal. The Canadiens’ playoff run has made the whole city very excited, and fans celebrated so loudly that even the ground seemed to shake.

Now, the Montreal Canadiens will play the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final. Game 1 will take place on May 21 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
