Before Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals on June 13, New York Knicks captain Jalen Brunson’s “one win away” tweet went viral on social media. It got sent out exactly 11 years to the day he was slated to take the court with the Knicks, needing just one win to become the NBA champion.

While the Knicks fans considered it a good omen for themselves, the tweet from Brunson was actually about the Stanley Cup run of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015, per B/R Open Ice on X.

He posted the tweet to manifest the title for the Blackhawks after they took a 3-2 series lead in the Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 13 that year. Although Brunson was born in New Jersey, his affinity with the Blackhawks arose after moving to the Chicago area during his teenage years.

Just two days after his tweet, the 18-year-old Brunson saw the Blackhawks clinch the Stanley Cup title for the sixth time after winning Game 6 against the Lightning on June 15, 2015. Although Chicago hasn’t gone past the first round of the NHL Playoffs since then, Brunson has taken his professional basketball career to a whole new level in his 20s.

In 2026, on this fateful day of June 13, the 29-year-old Brunson did become the NBA champion for the first time with the Knicks at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas. He scored 45 points in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, which the Knicks won 94-90 against the San Antonio Spurs, to clinch the series 4-1.

With that, the long wait of 53 years of not winning the NBA title for the Knicks ended, too.

The next morning, on Sunday, June 14, the Blackhawks took to their official X account to quote a tweet from Brunson about wanting the team jersey from 11 years ago.

“About time we get the champ a jersey ❤️🏆,” wrote the Blackhawks to acknowledge his NBA championship victory and fulfill his longstanding wish.

While the Blackhawks celebrated the achievement of one of their most famous fans, the franchise itself has experienced a very different journey since its last Stanley Cup triumph in 2015.

What Has Happened to the Chicago Blackhawks Since Their 2015 Stanley Cup Run?

After winning the Stanley Cup in 2015, their third title in six seasons at the time, the Chicago Blackhawks have slumped badly in the NHL. They have managed to qualify for the playoffs just three times in the last 11 seasons.

Most importantly, the Blackhawks haven’t been able to reach the second round of the playoffs after 2015, let alone make it to the Stanley Cup Final.

In the last four seasons of the NHL, Chicago has finished 8th and in bottom place in the Central Division, nowhere close to the playoff reckoning. During the 2025-26 season, they had a 29-39-14 record for 72 points to find themselves in 15th place in the Western Conference and 31st overall in the league standings.

While the Blackhawks are searching for answers, the Carolina Hurricanes won their second Stanley Cup title on Sunday, June 14. They defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 of the series with a 3-0 score line on the road at T-Mobile Arena to clinch it 4-2.
