Mitch Marner's longtime agent, Darren Ferris, claims that the Toronto Maple Leafs never protected his client during their nine seasons together. 

Ferris traced this tension back to Marner's entry-level contract in 2015. He said Marner agreed to sign without performance bonuses to help the team, even though the agent advised against it. 

"He really bled for that team," he said on the PuckPedia Hockey Show on July 22. "He was never protected by his organization, in my opinion."

Ferris said the Leafs made assurances in return that they later failed to keep. "He found out that a promise isn't a contract," Ferris said, referring to Marner.

"People say he didn't show up for training camp," said Marner's agent on the recent episode of the PuckPedia Hockey Show, explaining that some part of the media made false claims. "Well, he did. They didn't miss a day of training camp."

Ferris raised this claim in the recent episode of the PuckPedia Hockey Show on July 22, talking about Marner's departure from Toronto and his sign-and-trade to the Vegas Golden Knights last summer. Ferris also pushed back on rumours saying that Marner skipped training camp during a tense contract situation.

Those false narratives, Ferris said, turned Marner into a target in Toronto. He added that Marner faced threats on social media whenever he lost a point during games. He called out this disturbing behaviour and admitted that he personally received disparaging comments during the games too.

The cracks widened after the 2015 entry-level deal between Marner and the Leafs. Toronto held onto him through last season before both sides agreed a return wasn't happening, and the situation ended with them trading him to the Vegas Golden Knights on July 1, 2025.

Ferris also defended Marner's postseason record in Toronto, saying he had the most playoff points on the team. Marner's 63 playoff points (13 goals, 50 assists) rank fifth among skaters on the Maple Leafs' all-time playoff scoring list.

He played with an injury in a series against Boston. He labelled the injury as a fractured ankle while Maple Leafs had described it publicly at the time as a high-ankle sprain.

Marner missed out on the full performance bonuses in his entry-level contract to maintain salary-cap flexibility by limiting bonuses. However, two months later, Auston Matthews received the full bonus package in his entry-level contract.

While Marner's Toronto chapter ended on a bitter note, Vegas came with new opportunities.

Toronto completed the sign-and-trade last June, giving away Marner rather than risk losing him for nothing in free agency.

The Maple Leafs received forward Nicolas Roy in return. Mitch Marner went on to sign an eight-year, $96 million contract with the Golden Knights.

Marner has said the move gave him a fresh start with his wife and newborn son, and that the roster was already built to win. 

“When you're in that mental blender, it puts a lot of stress on your body, on your mind,” Marner said in June, per NHL.com. “You're up a lot of nights thinking about how to change things. Definitely being in a new environment like (Vegas) maybe just helped release it a little bit. Having these guys around me, too, helps a lot.”

He posted a career-high record of 102 points in his final regular season with Toronto. The early playoff exits with Toronto over the years added to the constant criticism he received that Ferris described. Vegas gave him a clearer path toward the Stanley Cup, as he never made it to the Cup as a Leaf.

Marner topped the NHL with 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists) in 22 playoff games, leading the Golden Knights on an unexpected run to the Stanley Cup Final.
