NHL Approves Sale of Penguins to Hoffmann Family in Major Ownership Shift

The Pittsburgh Penguins are officially entering a new era after the NHL’s Board of Governors approved the sale of the team from Fenway Sports Group to the Hoffmann Family of Companies. The deal is expected to close soon, completing an ownership change that was first announced last year.

The approval ends Fenway Sports Group’s four-year ownership of the Penguins and gives a new ownership group control of one of the NHL’s most famous teams. The financial details were not released, but Forbes valued the Penguins at $1.75 billion in 2025.

The sale comes amid the team’s recent playoff struggles. This season, they were eliminated from the first round against the Philadelphia Flyers by 4-2.

Sam Kennedy, CEO of Fenway Sports Group, said it was an honor to be part of the Penguins’ history. He also praised the team’s leadership, fans, and community, showing appreciation for the time his group spent running the franchise.

The CBS News report said incoming governor Geoff Hoffmann sees the purchase as more than a business deal. He called it “a defining moment for our family” and said the Pittsburgh Penguins stand for community, excellence, and long-term success.

He also said the new ownership group will support the president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas, along with the team’s business staff.

Hoffmann also stated, “We're proud to represent this storied franchise and are eager to become an active, invested part of the Pittsburgh community.”

His comments provide an early look at the new owners’ plans as they prepare to take control of the organization.

Hockey experience, Mario Lemieux speculation, and broadcast future

The same CBS News report said the Hoffmann Family of Companies already has experience in hockey. The family has owned the Florida Everblades since 2019 and has enjoyed a lot of success.

Since buying the team, the Everblades have won four championships, including three straight titles from 2022 to 2024 and the 2026 Kelly Cup. That success may give Pittsburgh Penguins fans confidence that the new owners understand hockey.

The company also owns businesses in agriculture, aviation, transportation, financial services, hospitality, and entertainment. It also owns western Pennsylvania companies such as Viking Plastics and DHR Global.

Another interesting possibility involves franchise legend, Mario Lemieux. Reports suggest he could eventually return to the organization in some role under the new ownership group.

No details have been confirmed, but such a move would reconnect one of the most important people in team history with the franchise.

The deal also includes SportsNet Pittsburgh. Penguins games will stay on the network next season, although the new owners are expected to review their future afterwards.

With league approval complete and the sale close to finishing, the Penguins are entering a major new chapter.

The Hoffmann Family brings hockey experience, strong business resources, and big plans for the future. The biggest question now is whether they can help Pittsburgh return to Stanley Cup contention. What do you think? Comment down below.
