The 2026 NHL Draft broadcast showed an unexpected but popular moment when top prospect Matthew Schaefer joined the Sportsnet coverage as a special correspondent for the night.
During a panel talking about the rise of young defensemen in the NHL pipeline, he shared his thoughts on other blue-liners entering the league. He spoke with both insight and personality.
“Another one of my fellow D-men," Schaefer said as posted by Sportsnet on June 26. "I love it. Love to see it. No, I mean, it’s awesome. Obviously, you see his hockey talent."
The panel later joked about Schaefer possibly moving into media full-time and asked if he would consider a broadcast career after retirement. Schaefer laughed it off.
“I love that," he replied. "You guys are the best. So thank you for everything.”
This time last year, the New York Islanders selected gifted defenseman Matthew Schaefer with the No. 1 pick. Schaefer's involvement in Sportsnet's 2026 NHL Draft broadcast, where he revealed the Islanders' selection of Malte Gustafsson, showed the faith both the franchise and the NHL have in his star potential.
The 18-year-old later became one of the first people to interview the first-overall selection, Gavin McKenna.
The lighthearted exchange, along with his confident on-air presence, quickly spread online, with fans appreciating his new role.
Fans praise Schaefer’s on-air confidence
The moment quickly sparked reactions across X, with fans praising his communication skills and maturity for his age.
“Matthew Schaefer is so good on TV, what can't he do?” a fan wrote on X.
Fans also praised Schaefer’s clear and confident on-air presence during the Sportsnet draft coverage and were impressed by how well he communicated. “Matthew Schaefer’s doing a great job playing reporter for the evening. How refreshing to see a hockey player who can form sentences!” read the comment.
Fans have spent years watching Schaefer shine on the ice. His first NHL goal came in a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals at UBS Arena on Oct. 11, a milestone that made him the second-youngest player at his position to score in the league. “Matthew Schaefer is already a top 5 broadcaster in hockey media," a fan is impressed by this side of the defenseman.
Another fan added a humorous long-term prediction.
“It’s blowing my mind that Matt Schaefer is already dipping into his post-career media career at age 18. This dude is all about multiple revenue streams,” read a comment.
No player this century had claimed the top spot in NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters after playing fewer than 20 games until Schaefer.
Another user summed up the reaction more simply. The comment says, “matthew schaefer is the best personality the nhl has gotten in years.”
The overall reaction showed surprise at how naturally the young defenseman handled media duties while preparing for his NHL career. As Schaefer continues his path to the league, fans are now watching not only his on-ice progress but also his growing presence off the ice.
