Patrice Bergeron is set to be immortalized by the Boston Bruins. The team has decided to retire his iconic No. 37 jersey at the franchise next season. The fans rejoiced on social media as the Canadian former player took his rightful place amongst the greats.

The Bruins posted on their official X account about retiring Bergeron’s jersey number on Thursday, June 18. It is considered the “highest honor” at the franchise.

“To the rafters. The #NHL Bruins are proud to announce that during the upcoming 2026-27 season, the club will bestow its highest honor upon Patrice Bergeron by retiring his No. 37,” they wrote on X.

With that, Bergeron’s No. 37 jersey will sit in the rafters at the TD Garden in Boston, MA, alongside 13 former Bruins players next season.

Notably, his NHL career began with the Bruins as a 45th overall draft pick in 2003. The forward played 1,294 games across 19 regular seasons, scoring 1,040 points (427G / 613A). He is a top-three scorer for them, joining Ray Bourque (1,506) and Johnny Bucyk (1,339).

In the playoffs, Bergeron appeared 170 times, scoring 128 points (50G/78A). In the 2011 championship-winning year, he scored six goals, notching 16 assists.

He became the captain of the Bruins in 2021 until his retirement in 2023 after Zdeno Chara left. The Bruins' last retired jersey was Chara’s No. 33 on January 15, 2026.

Bergeron excelled as a defensive forward during his time in the NHL to win the Frank J. Selke Trophy six times. He won the Mark Messier Leadership Award in his first year as captain (2021-22 season).

Apart from that, the 40-year-old managed to win two gold medals at the Winter Olympics for Canada in 2010 and 2014. His impact on the Bruins cannot be denied, and fans seem to agree.

The NHL fans were in complete unison on X in appreciating the impact on the sport made by Patrice Bergeron while playing with the Boston Bruins.

Acknowledging Bergeron's long history with the team, a fan commented, "Well deserved! 👏"

“One of the greatest players the league has ever seen. Well deserved, much respect …🫡” a fan said for Bergeron after learning about the jersey retirement.

“I am so happy that I got to grow up watching 37 play. I was still a young teenager when they won the cup, but every memory of him and how he played was the embodiment of clutch, a man, a captain, a legend. There will never be another Bergeron,” a fan shared a lengthy post in appreciation of Bergeron's journey.

A couple of supporters of the NHL called the decision of the Bruins to immortalize Bergeron completely spot on.

“Great move twenty years of dedication for Bergy!” one of them said.

“This is the biggest W the Bruins org will have this season. Bergy is one of the best to ever do it. What a legend,” another supporter noted.
