The Montreal Canadiens crumbled in Game 4 against the Carolina Hurricanes. Meanwhile, a historically low stat in the Eastern Conference Finals has sparked criticism among frustrated fans.
At the Bell Centre in Montreal, QC, the Canadiens were poor in almost all aspects of their play in Game 4 against Carolina, especially in offensive stats.
Gino Hard noted that Montreal registered just four shots on goal in the third periods of Games 3 and 4 combined. That included three last night in the one-sided defeat.
Additionally, in the third period of Game 4, Carolina managed 19 shots on goal despite a commanding lead and the option to just let the clock wind down.
Gino Hard also mentioned that "through 4 games, they have been outshot 136-65 by the Canes."
Following their scoring spree of six goals from 22 shots on target in Game 1 of the East Final, the Canadiens were reduced to just four goals from 25 shots in Games 2 and 3 combined.
In Game 4, it all came crashing down in front of their home fans, with 0 goals from 18 on-target shots.
NHL fans were not being forgiving of the Montreal Canadiens on social media
NHL fans were anything but forgiving of the Montreal Canadiens online.
One fan didn't hesitate to call them “frauds,” while the other was quick to mention that the surprising stat about their offensive play was “actually pathetic.”
Someone questioned Montreal for even getting this far in the playoffs. “That’s what happens when the refs drag you to the conference finals and your actual team is s***,” wrote the fan.
The Canadiens' journey to the Conference finals has indeed not been easy. They first faced Tampa Bay, then Buffalo, and both teams dragged their respective series to 7 games.
“Really embarrassing stuff from the Habs. Can’t win this way,” a disappointed fan said about the downturn for the Canadiens in the last three games in the East Final.
“Hard to believe the way the Habs are playing - if you don’t shoot, you can’t score! Game 3 they had zero shots in OT!" wrote another fan.
Now the Canadiens have to win two back-to-back games to take the Eastern Conference Finals to Game 7.
